Yeah, I know, you can't buy it in the US. But you have all the good filters for cheap.

Ah, I see... But the original question was for cheaper option than M1. Waiting for the 0W-40 is also good.

I was expecting to hear some Havoline/Chevron/Pennzoil synthetic recommendations, but after further research they're not that much cheaper than M1.

Some synthetics that are cheaper than M1, e.g. NAPA and ST aren't in the same ball park in terms of quality.

I see Havoline synthetic at AutoZone for $3.99 and NAPA-brand syn (probably Valvoline) for the same. Haven't tried either one. Then too, M1 is on sale at K-Mart this week for $3.99.

No, Their are no true synthetics priced lower then M1! Now if you want a fake synthetic you have all kinds of house brands and such that are cheaper. You also have Shell Rotella T Synthetic wich is not a true synthetic but it is cheaper then M1!

I agree with JB, their are no other TRUE synthetics that I know of less then $4.50 a qt.

Amsoil back in the early 80's claimed Mobil 1 wasn't a true synthetic at the time it was Di-ester. They then switched to PAO following Mobil. Now you have everyone calling Grp III a synthetic which is untrue.

If I lived in LA (or anywhere else that far south for that matter), I'd run a $7/gallon HDEO without hesitation. But that's just me.

All the 5w-40, Group III based, CI-4/SL rated, synthetic oils (Rotella T/Chevron Delo/Petro Canada Duron/Valvoline Extreme Blue, etc) are excellent values for the price.

The only drawback to using them is slightly less fuel efficiency and cold temp performance than you get with a 5w30 or even a 10w-30 like Mobil 1 that is formulated down around 3.0 Cp in terms of high temp/high shear viscosity. These oils I mentioned are up in the 4.0-4.5 Cp range, so they are up to 50% thicker under steady state conditions. They are however, excellent choices for high mileage engines - much better than the "label engineering" you find on HM oils.

I had some of the PC Duron 5w-40 shipped from the Great White North to Alabama just so I could run my own tests. It's an excellent oil for the price....

Several factors in determining what is truly cheaper. It's not just initial purchase price.

I consider how good is the TBN retention proven to be and how long can I run it. Some oils are consumed more, so your adding more make-up etc. 1/2 quart that you don't have to add is significant.

Pablo, Why not list them then? I can not think of any Group IV or V synthetics that can be had for less then Walmarts 5 quart jug price or Sam's Club price of $3.88 a cents a quart for M1. I am not talking sales price either! I am not counting G-III oils at all! Remember that the old M1 is still for sale not just the M1EP.
