Synthetic oil users

Hello and how many of you folks here are synthetic oil users? Just curious as some people use syn some folks use conventional. Also how long have you used synthetic?

I've used it since 100k miles in the Outback. But only when I get it for FAR or under $2 a quart.


Actually $2 a quart is my limit right now for either syn or conventional. Although I have 4 oil changes sitting in my closet floor right now, so I'm not in any hurry to get oil unless it is a great buy.

If I can't find any syn when I run out, I'll be happy to go back to conventional. It worked fine for the several hundred thousand miles I've driven before BITOG showed me free/cheap oil

Been using Mobil 1 for decades. Don’t know if it has really helped, but I use it for the protection. With new vehicles, I tend to put it in at the 8,000 mile mark. I tend to change my oil around the 6-8,000 mile interval (When I was younger and single and without kids, I would change it every 3,000. Probably a waste, but now I “stretch” it out). I also use tufoil and been using that for decades. When I owned a manual transmission, I would put the tufoil in and did notice much smoother shifting.

Synthetic labeled oils are almost always available on some sort of MIR deal or closeout.
For those who stash oil when they are able to pick it up really cheaply, synthetic ends up being really inexpensive, so you may as well use it.
WRT longer engine life or less wear, I doubt that it would matter which anyone used in most engines.
Engines usually outlive the vehicles in which they're installed.

For my personal vehicle....I like to use a blend of conventional HD Diesel oil, rated CJ-4, SM, and synthetic PCMO for the summer heat.

The blended mix is 2/3 HD Motor Oil and 1/3 synthetic motor oil in 0w,5w-20. I find that the engine seems to run much smoother with this mix....only in the summer.

For the winter....I'll run conventional or synthetic motor oil.

Now I'm running a blend of 2/3 Mobil 1, EP, 5w-20 and 1/3 Mobil 1 15w50.

I've used synthetic in almost everything since about 1988. If you drive many miles the synthetic extra cost over conventional will be free as you get slight better gas milage from the synthetic to make up for the extra cost.

I believe that synthetic saved my 351cid.Ford inboard boat engine as it overheated and I did not know for a while. Who knows but the extra high temp.protection of the sythetic sure did not hurt.

Have used Mobil 1 oils since 1978 with 10K OCIs. Never had a problem.

I've used it since the mid to late 80's era. I would use it and change it as per the manuals scheduled service intervals. Now a days since it's expensive I stretch it out a little more.In my other car I use the OLM monitor and do my OCI's on that car every 6K.

Now a days the variety is emmense and so everyone has a list of brands to choose from cuz everyone markets their own synthetic.

Synthetic in 2 vehicles, conventional in 1. I've been using synthetic oil since the late 70's. I started off with Mobil 1, made a few brand changes, and went full circle back to Mobil 1. I changed the conventional oil every 5k miles and synthetic every 6-12 months. I will be re-thinking my conventional OCI, since I replaced a vehicle. I probably will shortening it a bit.

I use synthetics in all 3 of my vehicles, have been using it since about 2000. We have a local blender here Boss Lubricants and their synthetics seem to do the job just fine with 8000km oci and at a great price point. Havent had an engine related failure (knock on wood) to date.

I always knew full synthetics can go the distance. My only issue was how long can the oil filter can go? That's why I use synthetic oil and stick to the manuals service schedule. However I still cannot deny that I have a reservation for it going to 8K or beyond. Has anyone gone 10K using M1 or any full synthetic will great success?

Absolutely! I did 10K OCI's for years with M1 in my 95 Chevy 1500, and some other vehicles I owned, too. Never ever a single hint of a problem.

Read my post on page 1 of this thread. YES! I have done 10K OCIs with Mobil 1 for 35 years with outstanding success. Mobil 1 oils are well know for keeping engines very clean and long lasting with virtually no wear.

Right now sitting on a small stash of NAPA 5W20 Full Synthetic I got last year for 3.49/qt.

1989 - First and every oil change for the 89 Accord. Initially, only doubled the 3,000 mile OCI I had followed in the 80's. Worked up to 10,000 miles after about five years. Wouldn't use anything else now.
