The machine marks were still visible. I tore into a 4.6 2v from a 2000 mustang. I sprayed nitrous for over 100000kms and the engine had 300000kms total. Still had visible cross hatching. I've seen my buddies and their Honda's with significant abided miles on the engines and the cross hatching was still visible.
See my point.
So yeah they consume a bit of oil but the engines overall last longer before needing a significant amount of work and money.

You bring up something that has me pondering the squareness of the engines in question. While lower tension rings certainly have an impact on bore wear I also question, in the older engines, whether R/S ratio is a contributing factor as well. The 305 and 350 both ovalled their bores when the miles racked up and were far less oversquare than the little Ford 302 which had relatively tall pistons and a 3" stroke.

In fact I don't think I've ever seen a 302 or 289 with worn bores that didn't have some sort of mechanical issue

And that must certainly predate the adoption of the low-tension rings.

Of course modern examples like the Modular are square or undersquare and they still don't wear the bores. But they of course have coated skirts and low-tension rings.

I may of course also be over-thinking this, there is that possibility

Honestly, if you want to do something, you should take your oil burning car, and another 2015 Camry that doesn't burn oil, to an emissions testing facility, and have them both run back to back on the machine. Then, you can compare their results against each other.

You will then know how much more HC is showing up on your oil burner, and you can then find out if your car is within the specs for the state you have the cars tested in.

I like that idea. If the car has higher than normal emissions during an emissions test it would be something to present Toyota with and make them fix it, especially while under warranty.
 
If you are worried about burning that much oil damaging your cat, why don't you run 10w30? I wouldn't run 5w40 on a car that spec 0w20 but 10w30 should be just fine and the synthetic ones usually have lower 10 if not even lower (i.e 6 something for Pennzoil Ultra 10w30) Noack.

I would never run a car/engine more than 15-20 miles in one stint new.

Engine need varying rpm and load for let say 1/2 hour then a full shut down and cooloff.

The marginally built ones will not work well, the near blueprint ones may do O.K .then flakey designs will puke.

I don't think speed is too much of an issue inless you over 3500 rpm for a long time.
 
I have the Honda tsb in front of me (12-087) for the08-011 Honda Accord Unusually high oil consumption. Reading between the lines - it appears the close coupled cat in conjunction with VVt that promote cam phased EGR is to blame.

This is an easy-driven cars short tripped injecting particulate from the CAT into the cyl during EX reversion causing deep scoring of the lower cyl bores. Honda's assertion that dirty, low quality fuel is a factor is ludicrous. Hard driving/loading with a cold engine though can be a factor.
