FRAM Ultra, NAPA Platinum, and Royal Purple Extended Life.

Which filter would you choose if they were all the same price?

But of course, they are not the same price.

A Fram Ultra would be less than both at AAP and can hold its own with either of the other two...

What about M1's filter?

Merkava,
The FRAM Ultra is a dual layer full synthetic filter and only the Royal Purple is comparing "apples to apples". FRAM Ultra has the highest capacity of any filter in the synthetic media realm. The RP filter is also a very good filter using the best microglass media money can buy though it is a single layer filter. (cant tell how I know that). All of the filter mentioned are very good when used with premium synthetic oil so it really become a matter of brand preference and pricing.

I don't think M1 has a fully synthetic media. I think it is a glass-fiber/cellulose blend.

Correct,it's a blend.

+1 purchased on Amazon, free shipping if you buy a couple.

I just made it over that hurdle myself. Bought one for the Camry! FRAM won't mess up a 19 year old 2.2l?? Ha!

The Ultra is better than those others in performance, and I'd say just as good or better in design/construction.

Presuming the criteria you establish ...
I'd buy the one closest to the liquor store, so that I'd have less distance to travel. I mean, if you're going to presume that all filters are 100% on equal footing here (which for any typical application, they are over-capacitized in every aspect anyway), then I might as well make a silly decision based upon proximity, right?

Motorcraft, which is cheaper than all of them?

All synthetic oil filters can go a bazillion miles, so I would have no preference.

RP even if more expensive.

Motorking,
I find that first sentence of your post intriguing because it seems to suggest that you don't consider the NAPA Platinum on even footing with the Ultra and the Royal Purple. Do you consider the NAPA Platinum subpar compared to the Ultra and RP ?

But of course ... he works for Fram.

But he also knows the performance specs of all those filters, and Fram comes out on top with respect to performance. Fram has probably thrown some of those filters on their testing machines to determine what they really do.

And frankly, I don't even know if I've seen any official efficiency advertised for the NAPA Platinum and RP Extended Life filter - has anyone seen an ISO test spec result? If the NAPA Platinum is the same as the WIX XP full synthetic, then it has a pathetic efficiency rating per how WIX rates their XP filter.

My personal choices of spin-on oil filters are mid-price($4-6) ones, these are my preference: Bosch Premium, Fram Tough Guard, Pure 1, Napa Gold, Wix ...

If I ever spent more than $6-7 for a spin-on filter then Fram Ultra is the only one I will consider buying. Why pay more than $8-10(cost of Ultra) for a synthetic spin-on filter and not getting better quality ? So far there is no data to show that any spin-on filter is better than Fram Ultra.

With cartridge oil filters for my E430 and Volvo V70 I stay with German brands such as Mann, Hengst, Bosch, Mahle ...
