Quick question on Mobil 1 5w20 vs the Synpower 5w20. I see on Mobil's site it shows

Mobil 1 5W-20 meets:

* ILSAC GF-4 energy conserving viscosity that flows quickly during cold starts.
* API SM/CF
* ACEA A1/B1
* Ford WSS-M2C930-A
* Chrysler MS-6395

Mainly what I am looking at is the

* Ford WSS-M2C930-A

part.

Now, on Valvoline's site I see no mention that it meets the Ford's requirements, it only shows...

SAE 5W-20: Exceeds all car and light truck manufacturers’ warranty requirements for the protection of gasoline, diesel and turbocharged engines where an API SM, SL, or CF oil is recommended. Exceeds European ACEA A1 and all requirements of ILSAC GF-3 and GF-4 for API Gasoline Engine Oils and meets Energy Conserving Standards.

Sooo, in other words, would not technically not be a FORD approved oil? I see no meeting of that FORD spec......Also, what is that FORD spec? What does it mean? I've been running the synpower in it, but just noticed no where does it say anything about that specific "meet" of Ford WSS-M2C930-A

This is common.

Exxon-Mobil spends an absolutely RIDICULOUS amount of money making sure their oils are certified and approved out the ying-yang.

The Valvoline doesn't say it's Ford approved because Valvoline didn't spend the money to have it tested.

Does this make the M1 a superior oil? No. But you do have a better idea "where you stand" with it in regards to manufacturer approvals and recommendations because of this.

Both the Premium Conventional and Durablend meet WSS-M2C930-A.

I'm pretty sure Synpower meets it.

im running synpower 5W30 in my corolla, jut did an oil change at 6050 miles,mostly short trips (ie..severe service) and will send it out for uoa, so see how it did.

Refilled with the same thing, reused the same pure one. Not to concerned about if it meets this or that spec. If used with a resonable oci, it will work just fine for me

I have a Ford req'ing the 930A spec.

I saw the same thing and emailed them.

Tech came back and said it meets the spec.

I'm keeping a copy for warranty purpose but I'm running 5K OCI per manual so I'm confident. I get it $0.99 on sale/rebate.

PP I got cost $2/qt. I have only done one run and it seems a waste to run PP for only 5K. For my 3.0L I think it could go 10K.

If I can't get good pricing I'll fall back to MC blend at $10.50/5 qt at WM. I may not do this if I were running the new Ford 7.5K OCI, then again I might.

Synpower has also been recently re-formulated for better wear protection.

Also I believe their base is Korean S-OIL .

Sorry I do not know. They buy base oils from XOM, that I do know but may also from other suppliers based on price etc.

As far as the new formulation, I have no clue. I just know that it coincided with their new campaign ad against Mobil.

I've never been a big fan of Valvoline, but never thought their oils were necessarily bad. I just don't like the fact that they clearly state on their website that extended drain intervals are bad and people should still change the oil every 3k miles. Knowing their ties with the quick lube market, I understand their position, however, it's a very dated practice.

The Effective Date in Synpower's PDS is 10-31-07. I doubt it has changed much. Its more of a marketing thing they got going on where a single wear test shows better than Mobil 1 5w30. But who knows how Synpower stacks up against some of the other grades and other tests.

How do you know that is the latest PDS though? I don't think it is.

I don't... I assume they keep it up to date. Especially when they are claiming Synpower is NOW better than Mobil 1 5w30.

But guess you could be right otherwise they would have marketed Synpower > Mobil 1 back when that old PDS was posted.
