I have a '92 Nissan 240sx that I'm looking to change the manual transmission fluid in. As far as I know, it specs a GL-4 fluid. However, a lot of 240sx owners on the web seem to have good results with the Pennzoil Synchromesh.

I checked out the Synchromesh, and it really doesn't say anything about being GL-3,4, or 5 that I can see. Nor does it clearly state what viscosity it is. But it does say it is safe for yellow metals, which is the major issue as far as I understand it.....knowing the viscosity of the 'Mesh wouldn't hurt either, I guess.

So basically I am wondering if Pennzoil Synchromesh is OK for my '92 Nissan's MT.

I am just looking to get something off-the-counter this time, as I need to get this done ASAP. I will look into some of the more "exotic", mail-order stuff for next time. Thanks.

*Edit* If the Synchromesh is no good for me, and you know of another off-the-shelf 75/80w-90 GL-4 gear oil please feel free to let me know about it.

Its too thin.
Stick with a 75w90. Redline/SF/Amsoil/RoyalP have that fluid.

And, Nissan backspec 75w85 for some of the their trannies which is another option.

Synchromesh has a 100C viscosity of 9.1 cSt.

For comparison, A 75W-90 gear lube (I'm quoting Redline MT-90) is around 16 cSt at the same temperature.

Synchromesh has the viscosity of ATF. Don't go there. There are plenty of options that WON'T trash your tranny:

Specialty Formulations MTL-R
Mobil 1 LS 75W-90
Redline MT-90
Amsoil MTG
Royal Purple Max-Gear

I had a 97 hardbody that I ran MT90 in, and it performed great.
I currently have a 93 Hardbody that im running MT90 in, and it also works great.
I run Amsoil MTG in my 04 frontier.

These trucks share the same tranny but for some reason redline shifted EXTREMELY bad in the frontier.
Both hardbodys got MT90 with over 100k on them.
The frontier got it at around 3k so im wondering if it was a break in issue?
The Frontier is much happier with Amsoil.
