I live in a subtropical climate which means it never freezes, and for 1/2 of the year temps are above 70 degrees F, even overnight.

I drive 4x 2 mile trips each day. also do at least one 20 mile trip a week, with a few 50 mile trips once a month. I also do occasional long trips (500 miles plus) maybe once a quarter.

Toyota only defines severe service as cold trips in freezing weather, so according to my OM I could do the 10,000 mile oil change intervals. Occasionally i drive on dirt roads.

for me Synthetic oil (Mobil 1 5w30) is about 2x the price of Synthetic Blends if I'm buying with a discount.

I'd also consider the environmental benefits of usig 10,000 OCI's.

Any thoughts?

Well that is a tough one in a way because of the dirt and short trips. I personally feel that I would rather use a little less regarded oil and change it out. That at least guarantee's you are flushing the oil/contaminants regularly. I would do the blend at 5K. Environmental...just recycle it.

Crinkles, you're only allowed to answer questions, not ask them, once you hit 4000 posts!

The syn blend at 5000 probably offers you more protection in that scenario. The dirt roads seem significant to me. I feel if we brush up against the severe category we might as well follow it. Or at least compromise half way towards it.

Happy New Year!

i know i know...

I just have been agonizing about it!

That doesn't sound like severe service to me.
Short trips are only really an issue in a cold climate, besides your 20 mile weekly trip pretty much negates any adverse effects.

Driving on dirt roads isn't an issue per se; driving into dusty air is the issue which you didn't clarify.

I'd lean towards the shorter OCI with the cheaper oil.

BTW, isn't 5w30 an awful light oil for down under? Do you get a lot of ribbing from your mates?

well... the manual for my camry says 5w30 is too thin (only to be used below 10 deg C), but Mobil recommends 5w30. I'd probably stick with 10w30 if using synthetic blends. yeah even 10w30 gets me funny looks...

crinkles,

Personaly I wouldn't consider going 10K oil changes unless the factory backs you up. The fact that you have an OLM and indicates you can go 10K before any OCI is warranted is a good sign. Just use a good oil filter that'll go the distance and consider a synthetic of your choice. If anything goes wrong you can use the OLM as proof to back you up.

I also do not see severe here with the 20 trip per week. Dirt roads are of little consequence unless you are running into dust clouds and even then, a good filter takes care of that. I'm thinking you have it correct-5K with a blend and 10K full synthetic-either way. I like the 10w30 comment as it might be the best way to go here.

+1 mobil claims 5k on dino, 7.5k on blend............

Can you imagine trying to collect on that???? why not just do 5k on any good syn??? I try not to find trouble. Remember you are getting the guy in the diner reply rather than actually knowing for sure.

I agree it probally would be some major hoops to jump through to collect. But also I disagree that there is "trouble" with 10K OCIs with a quality synthetic fof most engines.

I can get M1 in 5w30, from local stores, but also cheaper online. At the online place i Can also get Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w- and 10w30 for a better price. Still considering EP 10w30 for 10,000 miles. Maybe I should go the 10k on EP then do a used oil analysis?
