Sydney to close down in a few weeks.

APEC is coming to town in a few weeks, and Sydney is going to be ground to a standstill.

Another public holiday declared to "alleviate congestion" (Sydney siders only), the CBD closed to traffic. Airport closed to traffic.

Cost to business is huge (loss of customers, loss of traffic, penalty rates).

I know what you mean. When New Orleans had the World's Fair in 1984, and sprang into a frenzy of cosmetic "reconstruction" on the streets, esp. in the French Quarter, it was impossible to get anywhere.

The local joke was that "New Orleans is closed for repairs."

We had APEC in Auckland a few years ago,it was chaos.Taxis and limo's were booked out,huge security at the airport,choppers in the sky.Auckland's traffic problems were high lighted to people in power...but still nothing has been done.

They are canceling elective surgery in some hospitals to free up floors in case any of the dignitaries have issues. Huge sections of Sydney closed down to Sydneysiders in the name of security. Huge concrete walls all over the place.

Helicopters following motorcades jamming all communications devices (tough luck if you need to call an ambulance).

One of the dignitaries decided to have an extra 2 days (arriving two days early), further compounding the chaos.
