I have an 88 Bronco II with 45,000 miles on it that I bought from an old lady who only drove it once or twice a week. I know that it has used regular petroleum based oil since it was new but was thinking of switching to synthetic so I have the peace of mind of knowing I have the best in my car. The only problem is I've got mixed opinions on switching some of told me that it would mess up my enging if I swiched since it been using petroleum for so long but others have said it's 100% compatible. What do you think? Also if i switch I've been thinking of switching to Mobil 1 or Royal Purple, but have recentley heard about Amsoil and from what I've heard it's superior to all others. What is your opinion? Hope you can give me some advice.

All of them make the best oil, and each is superior to the other...at least, that's what they claim.
The more I read here on BITOG, the less I am convinced that there is any oil that stands head and shoulders above the rest (sorry GC fans, but even that formulation has now changed).
Personally, I would tend to stay away from the "boutique" oils, i.e., those which must be ordered and shipped to you to be obtained.
I say use an off-the-shelf synthetic oil, one that is API certified, go with reasonable OCI's, and be happy.

If it were mine, i would be concerned about the material of 1988 seals not being compatible with synthetic. I would use Chevron, Pennzoil, Castrol ect in the 10w30 and see how she runs. I'm sure someone here will say to use Auto-RX with 15w40 which i wouldn't do. Too thick.

Got for it. Mobil 1 all the way. I don't like Amsoil because I have to get it from a dealer and not in stores just like Royal Purple its hard to get your hands on. I use Mobil 1 in my truck and my wifes and parents in laws cars and vans. They love it. A lot of people will tell you to Auto Rx everything but I don't belive in messing with that stuff either. Just put it in and be happy. I would personally though go for a 3000oci first and then go like I do 6month/6000mile but you get adjust to what ever you prefer after that.

Synthetics have been compatible with seal material for the past 25 years, and over 32 years for AMSOIL.

Yea..that won't be an issue. I think you can go right to Mobil 1 or Amsoil. You might want to do this first though.: http://www.auto-rx.com/
If not go a couple intervals of maybe no more than 5K miles with synthetic.
Otherwise the latest generation of conventional oils promise to be darn good. Make sure they say :GF-4/SM on the bottle.

M1 is a great oil, and Id say in 90% of applications, you can find a great one on a spec viscosity.
In some apps (the GM 4.3L V6 for example), I just can't say what is the best. But it seems to be Pennzoil Conventional! In a ford engine... ????? Motorcraft?
UOA is key to figure out at the end of the day what is best for your engine/driving profile.

I think that the GF-4/SM conventional oils are great products and far superior to the oils of 1988. I would suggest a couple of OCIs of Havoline 10W30 with a Motorcraft filter. Change the oil and take it out on the Interstate and run it up to 70 MPH several times.
I don't think you will see an advantage with Synthetic in terms of wear, unless you want to extend the OCIs. Put a good dino in it and drive it. This vehicle hasn't been driven much over its life.....putting some highway miles on it will actually do it some good.
