2008 FJ Cruiser, bought it at about 94K miles, at about 104K now, did one oil change with factory filter and conventional 5w30. Might have been Mobil, might have been Valvoline, don't remember. Good oil, though.

I like what the Mobil1 has done for everything else I run, so I'm switching this one over today.

Any ideas on what would be a good first interval to send out a sample?

I was changing oil on all of the vehicles when the light came on as long as I was running conventional, seems to have worked so far. Can't tell going to synthetic if this will make sense or not. The Mobil1 Super was $26 for 5 quarts, not a big deal to change early.

What got me thinking about this is when I switched the 5.3 GMC over to synthetic at about 135K miles, the amount of crud that came out with the first change was amazing.

Start with the Owner's Manual recommendation. FJ Cruiser have an oil change dash light to tell you? Good baseline is one exact manufacturer's recommendation for your specific driving conditions. If the syn Blackstones out in great shape, then you know if you can go further or not. Fram Ultra oil filter.

FYI:

Mobil 1 and Mobil Super Synthetic are different products; Super Syn is synthetic (as is mobil 1), but not in the Mobil 1 line.

I'm going to guess that the worst oil Mobil sells today is probably better than the best oil you could buy off the shelf 30 years ago, but because I'm the kind of person who hangs around this forum, I do still wonder -- what's the difference?

Mobil's website told me nothing useful.

It's been about 20 years (1997 IIRC) since the meaning of 'synthetic oil' changed because of the Castrol/Mobil thing. Today we can call highly refined dino oil 'synthetic' (Gr.III) while Synthetic used to indicate Gr IV (PAO) or higher.

I know that most of today's Gr III syns are excellent, but how they compare with the PAO syns of 20 years ago, I'm not sure. I would imagine the progression of technology would make the current syns better despite the use of Gr.III basestocks?

today most "synthetics" $5.XX a qt in 5 qt containers are highly refined CRUde oils aka group III. i like the mobil I extended performance said to have some group IV PAO in it. in your area a 10-30 would be stronger with less viscosity improvers required, if your using oil a 10 or 15w40 would be even better. the shell 15-40 rotella T is popular + priced right. lots of options for but changing regularly with most brand name oils will work

It's less of a big deal when you factor in the $12 rebate Mobil is offering until May 31st (net $13 for $5 qts).

Any reason why Mobil Super Synthetic and Mobil 1 should not be mixed?

I bought a 5 quart jug of the Super Synthetic, drained the oil, and remembered that it's a 5.5 quart system on the FJ.

Went back to the store, they were sold out of Super Synthetic but they did have Mobil 1.

As an aside, the ticking noise that has been there since I bought the vehicle about 10K mikes ago disappeared immediately.

How does the Fram Ultra compare to the Toyota factory filter?

And for the GMC with the 5.3, how does the Fram Ultra compare to Baldwin?
