Switching To Mobil 1 Extended Performance

Earlier today, I picked up 5 qt of Mobil 1 Ext. Performance 10w30 and a Mobil 1 oil filter from Pep Boys for $30. With over 143,000 miles on the Saturn, I am going to make the switch to Mobil 1 Ext. Performance.

Although the engine has no leaks, it does consume oil. For the first 3000 miles of a fill, it consumes between 1/2 to 2/3 qt. Thereafter, it consumes 1 qt every 1500-2000 miles.

It will be interesting to see what effect Mobil 1 Extended Performance will have on this engine. I will, however, run Amsoil Engine Flush (old formulation) before switching over.

Any guesses as to what will happen to the consumption? Anyone have experience with Mobil 1 in the older Saturns?

How did the formula shell run otherwize? Are you going to EP with the EP?

mobil 1 does not have a good track record with burn-off

my take is, it will burn at the same rate as the previous oil

I will run the Mobil 1 Extended Performance until it consumes 1.5 quarts of oil, at which point, I will change it.

Formula Shell worked fine, but so did Chevron 5w30.

A PAO 10w30 synthetic should have very little or no VI so it should have extremely low volatility.

According to their November 2008 test, Amsoil shows Mobil 1 Extended Performance to have a 8.62% volatility while Formula Shell has a 14.03% volatility.

Why not run Mobil 1 10w30 High Mileage in that application? I used the 10W-40 High Mileage and it really cut down on my consumption in my old Saturn...

What are you trying to achieve? What you've been doing has worked great...

You could be changing this oil as soon as 4500 miles. Why not just add a quart and keep going?

With the miles you have why aren't you using Mobil 1 HIGH MILEAGE oil??? Seems sort of designed for that kinda use.

Yea, from what I understand High Mileage oils are formulated better to plump up seals (stop leaks, or at least slow them down). BUT, no idea the characteristics the High Mileage oils got for burn-off problems...perhaps someone else could chime in.

I've always been under the impression; only run High Mileage if the vehicle shows signs of "needing" it (basically, excess leakage, loss of oil, etc...) - not sure if that would include burning/consuming oil though.

Mobil 1 High Mileage oils are thicker at operating temp., and claim they can do some cleaning. There's an old thread at Saturnfans.com by a "Bill Murray" that claims he reduced consumption on his daughter's Saturn SL2 by switching to Mobil 1 0W-40. I also noticed a reduction in consumption--though not necessarily dramatic enough to justify the additional expense of Mobil 1 syn oil--when using both Mobil 1 0W-40 and GC SYNTEC 0W-30. Of course, they are thicker oils, and may or may not do some cleaning in the ring pack where 1.9L Saturns notoriously coke-up causing oil consumption...
