swapping oil

Hi, I have a 2004 Ford Expedition that gets driven a 12 mile drive once a week (I just drive it around then park it back in the garage) and a 600 mile trip a couple times a year. I've been using AMSOIL 0w30 SSO and changing my oil every 2 years.

I have a 2008 Chevy Silverado 1500 work truck using the same oil which I change once a year at about 12,000 miles. I use it for pool service and I live in a small town, so it drives many .5 mile to 1 mile trips and I only use the truck for work.

I was thinking about changing my oil every 6 months and putting the new oil in my Expedition and putting the Expedition's 6 month old oil in the truck. I figure I'll change the Expedition's oil filter once a year and the trucks every time.

Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to put the used oil from the Expedition into the truck, like maybe different types of metals getting put in the truck?

Thanks for any opinions.

I don't think I'd ever feel comfortable putting used oil in my engine. Too much risk of contamination during draining.

I'd rather use a 'new' cheap Dino like PYB for a 6 month OCI

Save the Virgin Amsoil for your work truck.

Totally agree. But either way you do it just use fresh stuff. Oil is too cheap of an investment to play around with transferring used oil into a nice vehicle. Lawn equip, or a real beater maybe, but not in your scenario.

Yes, you can transfer the Expedition's 6 month old oil to the work truck, but you need to filter the used oil very well(1 drop per 3-5 seconds) after you drain the oil from the Expedition into a clean container. It may take a day or more to filter 5 quarts of used oil.

Swapping oil from one vehicle to another makes no sense. If the oil has life left, keep it in until it's done.

Also, if the weekly driving is for the expedition's sake and not because you just feel like driving it, then I'd suggest you stop that. The money you save on gas can be used to buy a trickle-charger to maintain the battery. The 600 mile trips will cover maintaining the rest of the mechanicals.
