Surprized @ Suzuki's Oil Viscosity Recomendation

I bought this 94 1.3 L Suzuki Swift car to save some money on getting to and from work. It had 174K on it and I have been slowly converting it over to Amsoil. I have changed the oil twice and have about 177,000 on the car now.

I thought I would check out the Amsoil car/product engine search on the Amsoil website. In most cases it calls for a 20-50 weight oil. I have been running the straight 30 weight without any problems. No consumption, a little tick, tick in the first mile then quiet.

Question, which oil would you run on this engine?

What does the manual call for? Like most cars, you could probably run many different viscosities depending on the temp. I'd chose the one that gives you the best fuel economy and engine wear.

buster, the car was in a junk yard and had the window smashed out of it. A junkyard cat was urinating in the back seat. I have used 4 bottles of a bacteria killing spray and installed a new window. Changed out all the fluids and tires and drive it. There was not any manual in the car. This is a junkyard special

in the worst way. I was thinking with the mileage on the engine that I would put 10-40 in the Spring in

but the car is saving me about 150bucks a month in gas to and from work right now. I guess I am looking for other owners of this type of car/engine that have experience with the oil viscositys. I don't have any complaints with the 10-30/30 so far.

...my bad..I should have known you wouldn't have a manual for this car. Well, stick with that and do a used oil analysis. I'm sure it will be fine unless the engine is really worn but with no oil consumption, it sounds good.

I'd run a 10w40 or a thick 10w30 if your going to do extended drains. A friend had a metro and it acted very similiar to my festiva engine wise it alot of ways. Both would start to burn oil past the 3k mark unless it was a heavy 30 weight. Plus it's a high rev engine.. actually higher than the festiva's but I could still whoop him.. that's another story though. Treat it right you'll get alot of miles of that 4cyl.

Hm, I'm pretty sure Suzuki called for 5w30 as a year-round oil for the 3 cylinder in the Swift, so you'd probably be fine running it in the 4 cylinder engine.

Amsoil also recommends 0w30 and 5W-40.

I have a Suzuki with the J18a. I use Amsoil 10w30 with a 15K mile OCI. Suzuki's thrive on abusive high RPM usage.

Well, I don't think the G13A (I assume that's what in LargeCarManX2's 'zuki) would like being spun up much. It's just a plain, basic 4 cylinder, SOHC with throttle body fuel injection.

I have a 94 1.0L Metro. The manual recommends 5W30 or 10W30. I use whichever is on sale.

Amsoil has a commercial grade 10w30/SAE 30
ASE 4 Stroke small engine formula that would work well in this application 1.3 Suzuki Swift

My 90 Suzuki Swift (same engine) called for 5w30 as recommended but stoped at like 91°F and then recommended 10W-40 or 20W-50 beyond that according to the Service Manual (had more listings than the owners manual which stopped at 91°F. Will run just fine on all but for winter you need the thinner stuff. Valvetrain was quieter with 20W-50 or 5W-50.

I ran 15w40 in a '96 Suzuki X-90, 1.6 liter DOHC engine, that I bought for the daughter when she was in high school. She still has it and it still gets 40 weight in it, either 5w40 or 15w40 depending on my stock.

I put 5w30 synthetic in it one time, and it sounded like it was full of ball bearings. I took it out a week later.

At least in '96, Suzuki recommended really thick oils. 20/50 would probably be OK as well.

On more LCM, as we discussed before, My XFI says 5w30, I run 10 in the summer.....

I would start with AMsoil S3K 5W30 and go from their. Seeinghow this car is all about fuel ecconomy! IF it burns too much S3k then go to something thicker. Their 0W40 water craft oil looks promiseing as well.

I tried Mobil 1 15w-50 in a '96 Metro w/ the 1.3L.. It ran just like it was full of molasses.

I'd normally run a 30 weight, but with that many miles I would personally run Shell Rotella T 5w-40 year round and call it a day.

Otherwise I'd recommend 5w30 for winters, and 15w40 in summertime.
