I thought i read that ST filters had ADBV's...I picked up an ST3950 for my Galant and after reading the box, it appears it doesn't???

I also "think" i read that the AAP i'm using for the civic, DOES have one?

thanks for any help.

I'll have to look at my MC FL820s also...i don't recall seeing one there, but they say it has one.

If the filter is mounted upside down then one isn't needed, as is the case with my 2002 Subaru Outback 2.5L--the Purolator 14460 filter has NO adbv for this reason.

Correct--the oil can't drain "up" into the engine against gravity without being pumped. When the engine is shut off, the oil in the filter stays there, courtesy of gravity.

But any oil in the engine passages that are located higher than the filter can drain back down. It does matter, just not as much.

What application is the 3950? Do you know what an ADBV looks like?
Don't expect the box to tell you all the features.

Gravity? Any oil above the filter will drain through the filter regardless how it is mounted if there is no ADBV. And, any oil below the filter can create a vacuum pulling oil up through the filter if there is no ADBV. IMO, ADBVs are a must for all engines. Don't blindly think that a filter doesn't need an ADBV if it is perfectly vertical.

Don't underestimate the need for an ADBV.

My Colorado engine design has a large volume oil channel that sits above the filter. The filter never empties.

If you have a system like this, then why buy a filter with an ADBV???? Whenever moving parts are involved, occasional failure can be expected. So no ADBV equals no failure with my setup.

well, i looked at that filter again and the FL820S...which has an ADBV...
also, my galant is mounted horizontal...regardless, i don't see an adbv.

Test that 3950. Take a new one and blow into the center to see if air flows out of the smaller holes.

X-referencing the ST3950 to other brands shows ADBV's.

Dissect a used one to see if you can't see something that is there.

Try the ST3985 as an upsize.

Let me show my true ignorance, so I CAN upsize?

how about on a 2001 Civic with 1.7 VTEC? reason i ask is that filter is TINY! I can't picture that thing going over 3k mile...and I'm trying to run it to 4k and even 5k if i can.

Yep, there are many upsize and downsize filters that can be used for various reasons.

You can search here. There are plenty of 20mm filter sizes to choose from for your imports. Or, you can just ask upsizes for a given common brand PN.

My dad ran St7317 on his 2001 Civic for 7500 miles with ease. Ran Pennzoil 5w-20 conventional and ST filters and the UOAs were fine.

Other than the short block replaced @ 14k, no issues with the engine to date.

Take care, Bill
