When I purchased a Supertech ST 8A filter at Walmart last time, I noticed it was the last one, so tonight when I was back there, I went to look to see if they had gotten in any more. They had, but the filter boxes looked shorter. I took a filter out of the box and compared it with a Fram PH 8A and it appeared to be a half to three-fourths of an inch shorter. Have they gotten shorter, or is it just my imagination?

The new Ecore filter is 4.53" tall whereas the old filter was 5.00".

I noticed both the ST and Fram are smaller than the OEM and Bosch I have for my Hyundai. I was looking at trying the ST, but not with it being that small.
Hey, I noticed the same thing, there was one ST8A in a taller box and then several in a shorter box. I think it is a mistake. I looked inside the short one and could not see a bypass valve and could see the filter paper elemment from inside.
I think the new ST8A is crap! I won't buy it. I buy Motorcraft anyway, but wanted a cheap filter for a quick rinse job. The one long ST8A at Walmart was damaged so I went to AutoZone and got the Valuecraft V8A, which is the same as the SuperTech from what I can tell, even
to their having shorter ones with the same viewable filter element. I would not trust these shorter ones. Maybe a mislabeling job.
OK, thanks. I had not been following the filter forum, but found this thread by a search on ST8A. The ecore search revealed some phots and it is exactly what I saw inside. But then it also looks like the end caps are not metal. Cardboard, glue, plastic? Couldn't tell from the photos. Still, I don't like it, but I bought the old design. Oh yeah, a dual function antidrainback and bypass? Weird.
Hey, maybe I am saved. Last time I looked, no ST 3950's. The Menards I hit Saturday didn't stock the QS one, and AA and AZ don't have them in their house brands. Haven't checked for Purolator or STP yet. I could use an ST 3593A and still have more filter area and better construction than a PH 3950, but who wants to cut back in filter area? The ST 3950 is 3 3/4'' in diameter and 3'' high. The support for the idler arm is just over 5'' from the base plate. I doubt I could even get a 5'' filter on, let alone let the engine rock in the mounts. A half inch less could make a big difference. I think I could elbow my oil pressure sender out of the way for a fatter filter.
If you are referring to the 6607, the 7317 filter is the same filter, but longer. Same setting on the bypass valve

I am still looking for a more available/larger alternative to the ST 3950. Does anyone know what thread the ST 2 and ST 16 have and other specs.? Don't need a bypass for my Chevy. The ST 5 and ST 9 they had on the shelf today, were still too long to fit.
If you stay with the ST brand, you are stuck with the ST3950 since the 20 x 1.5mm thread pitch is what you need. Mobil 1 #105 or Amsoil SDF 44 would be better quality, but more expensive alternatives. Both are readily available in my area. The ST3593A is the same gasket and thread, but smaller diameter and could be used in a pinch. The ST2 (22 x 1.5mm) and ST16 (3/4 x 16) are both out of the question due to wrong thread size. Conclusion, you can go smaller with ST3593A, ST7317, or ST6607, but not bigger. What vehicle is this on? You said Chevy, but this must be a foreign born "Chevy" to have a ST3950 (metric threads). Come to think of it, the local Walmart had those ST3950's on clearance fo $1 ea. a couple months ago. Maybe they're going to discontinue the # due to low demand.
