SuperTech 10W-30, 2546 mi, 89 Mazda B2600i

4X4, 2.6L with 136403 mi.

Fram oil filter put on by Walmart.

Short trips.

"Ticking" sound on start-up, especially when it hasn't been driven in over 1 week.

Oil Report

Blackstone comments: "Wear looks great in this Mazda engine. No moisture, fuel, or coolant was present in the oil and the viscosity was normal for 10W-30 oil. This SuperTech is working quite well for you, and we see no reason to try another type of oil. Looks like you are doing everything right with this engine."

Ticking sound on startup could be caused by crappy Fram filter. I've had problems with this on my vehicles. Try the OEM filter, or a Wix.

Another very decent UOA from a "cheap" oil. It may be heresy to say on this site, but I believe that for most passenger vehicles, any SL rated oil will work and your engine will likely never know the difference.

For only 2500 miles, I would hope it looks this good. Patman's Honda and Corvette had similar wear numbers at 5000 miles on GC.

Not at all, I said 3-4 years ago at Noria that the onslaught of hydrocracked bases with improved additive packages and polymer chemsitry would put a big dent in the "synthetic" sales pitch.

Run the oil past 5000 miles as was mentioned above and you will need to control oxidation and volatility issues. Periodic Auto-RX cleaning ( once a year or so) and LC in the oil with FP in the gas is a great way to get NEAR syn performance at a low price.

It is still hard to beat a good grp 4 or 5 syn with a high quality add pack for max performance. Of course not all need that.

Analysis sheds light on the "need" and proper application.

What you will need to watch here ,JAYCEE, is the insolubles production and that fact that approximatley 5000 mile averages are used for the universal wear values.

Good report, I have a 1987 Mazda B2000 and have thought of trying supertech in it, looks like a good 3 or 4 month oil, if I can wait that long!

Looks good! Put more miles on the oil though.....that way you can get a better picture of engine and oil. It seems to me all oils seem to show more wear in the first 1-2k miles of an OCI, and then metals seem to stabilize for the next few k miles.
