I have a 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 Crew Cab Max Trailer Package with the 6.0 liter engine. 49,000 miles on it so far. Almost from the day I brought it home the engine clattered when started and ticked most of the time when fully warmed up.

I have tried Pennzoil conventional, Some type of Syn Castoroil, PU, and even Redline, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy all in 5w30 grade except for the 0w-30AFE.

I have tried Amsoil, Bosch and pure one filters

Is there an oil that I missed that you all think I should try to calm down the engine? Or do you all think there might be something wrong with the internals? I do have an extended warranty on the truck if I have to get the dealership rip into the engine.

my 5.3 06 makes no ticking/rattling durring start up or while running (other than gas pingging with cheap gas).. i would deffinately let the shop check this out.

Not sure about your particular model but GM's late small blocks have had an issue with piston slap. Its due to design and there isn't anything you can do about it. Haven't owned one, but drove one at work and it just kept going. Hard miles and no issues.

+1 Piston Slap , very common on this family of GM engines. Some have them and some don't , seems little in the way of oil/filter combos can be done to shut the ticking up.

I've got a 99 with a 5.3. Mine used to make a heckuva racket at start up until I put in the liqui-moly MOS2 additive into it. It took a few days but the engine is now completely quiet. And mileage increase 1km per liter.
Give it a shot. It's inexpensive and works well

There are two ideas to try, one is change to a 5w40 oil which will help rattle when hot or try using a more specific Liqui Moly oil additive, BUT only if you can't get the problem fixed. Their German web site lists the different ones available and I would not use Moly but one of the other rattle specific additives:

Putting some thicker oil between the piston skirts and the side walls might help...

Let me rephrase, it is an LSX problem 4.8, 5.3, 5.7, 6.0 etc etc.

I have had 3 5.7s, 1 5.3, and 1 6.0. All have done it, no change in oil helped. After it warms up it should disapate or disappear all together.

We own or have owned quite a few slappers, it is annoying but should quickly cease in less than a minute.

Does not harm longevity, these motors still outlast the vehicle even in our fleet service.

Note that we also suffer from carbon knock, which can sound very similar.

Cold clatter is likely piston slap. If it's still ticking when warm, try adjusting the valves.

No, I kid, I kid!

Seriously, here's what I would try. Assuming your engine takes five quarts of oil, use 4 quarts of Mobil 1 0w30 and use one quart of Mobil 1 0W-40. Or, if it takes six quarts, pour in a whole jug of 0w30 and one quart of 0W-40. The K24 in our CR-V is "ticky" on some oils and not on others. It's been particularly loud on the Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 I have in there now, but I recently drained a quart out and replaced it with a quart of Mobil 1 0W-40. On the next oil change, I intend to use all Mobil 1, four quarts of 0W-20 and one quart of 0W-40.

It is not a solution at all, but a thick oil should help with noise.
That said, you got a lemon if it makes noise from day one , esp when hot.

I have a 98 suburban with the common piston slap and no oil weight changes helped. Tried 20-50 and 15-40 and that didnt stop it. It goes away quick after you start it any way. I may try this Liquid Moly stuff to see how that does just for kicks. I am not too worried about the slap anyway. I dont hammer the truck much and until it is well warmed up on those rare time I do beat on it some.
