Things have been a bit rough here recently as my oldest Sister passed a week ago. My mind isn't working as it should.

Came up to my Brother's today to do the Windows 10 Upgrade for him. I have Windows 10 ISO on USB so it shoud have been easy. However due to that aforementioned lack of focus I went right to the clean install with upgrading 1st which you MUST do for it to be free/activate.

Got the whole thing installed, added AV, E-Mail, printer, etc... Final step was some personalization and then I saw it = Windows must be activated to personalize. It hit me then that I had forgot the critical upgrade step.

So I had to find the system restore discs( clean install of Win 10 removes ability to roll back to previous version as you can in the upgrade ), reload the original operating system, go through 100's of updates( that are just now finishing - needed one update to be able to do the Win 10 upgrade and had to do a butt load more to get it )for Win 7, and now I will have to do the upgrade and then clean install w/ all the extras again.

Man, it about made me

FYI, you don't need to do all the updates to install 10, I've done a pile of them straight from a fresh install of 7, you use the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and when it checks for updates just restart the Windows Update service (you may have to do it twice) and it'll go right on through the install.

Sorry to hear about your loss. My condolences.

The only thing stupid is how Microsoft does things. I'll stick with Windows 7 for as long as possible.

Unless you have the problems I did trying to get the upgrade to complete. There is a KB update for Win 7 that came out late last year that addresses the issue I had. To get it I ahd others I needed to get.

You using the media creation tool to do the update? What's the issue you had? As I said, I've done a pile of them this way but it's a pretty specific process with using the tool, restarting the WU service a couple of times...etc.

May not have worked, but I would have tried phoning Microsoft, explaining your predicament, giving your Win7 Activation Code, and asking for a Win10 Activation Code to enter on the Clean Install.

Like I said, may not have worked, but it doesn't take long and I've had good experiences with the process; the only time they didn't help me the way I wanted to was when I had a laptop stolen and they would not allow me to re-use the Activation Code for MS Office and refused to issue a new one.

Aside from that, though, they have been helpful in every other case.

You're not stupid at all. You're just grieving. That kind of loss would throw off anyone with even a hint of a soul.

Really sorry to hear about it. Glad to see there's some support for you here.

Agreed.

When have to do a clean install I basically install W7, install the network driver, and then activate W7. Then do the W10 upgrade from the web.

NH, sorry for your loss and the extra stress.

Yes. I was using the MCT. I have done this multiple times. I have the ISO on USB for clean installs but it slipped my mind I had to do the upgrade 1st so it would activate.

The KB update( patch ) addresses a couple issues when trying to upgrade from Win 7 including mine which is the update process hanging. It gets stuck on checking/downloading updates at 0% and there is nothing you can do to skip/fix it. Tried 4 times, tried the FixIt Tool, etc... before finding out about the patch( sorry I don't have the link anymore ).

Currently on 40% of the download for the upgrade. Hopefully it will get through the [censored] update check this time?

The most recent build of Windows 10, released within the last month or so also allows for activation with an valid 7 and up product key.

Got it fixed no problem as soon as the updates were done and the patch applied. Went right through after that easy peasy.

Thanks again for the thoughts and sympathy.

I read about that online while just looking more into the problem I had and waiting endlessly for the updates to all finish. I saw though where many said that it doesn't work? Have you been able to do that and if so what is the process? Just enter the Windows 7 code/key while installing Windows 10?

Wouldn't have mattered in the end though even if I could have used his Windows 7 code/key to activate the initial clean install of Windows 10 I did. I would have still had to reinstall the OEM OS( actually restore factory image )to get it as the system didn't come with any discs with the # on it and the sticker on the case fell off at some point and is gone.

THANK GOD when I helped my Brother get it the 1st thing I did after we unpacked it and started it up was do the system recovery discs. If I hadn't, I would have been paying for a Windows 10 license for him after screwing up.

Once the updates were done the upgrade process went smoothly as it has for me every other time as said ^^^. If I hadn't needed that one update/patch I would have been done with it hours earlier and it would have only been a minor annoyance.

Geesh...life's coming at you from all sides! I recall you writing about her. My condolences.

Yes, your mind probably isn't working as it should. But then again, you've just suffered a traumatic loss of a family member. You're not stupid, just in shock. A Momentary Lapse in Reason is all.
