Regardless of who you buy it from, write a separate check to the state for the sales tax. If you buy from a dealer or private lot and include the sales tax in the payment to them, and they go bankrupt between the time you pay them, and the time they would normally send the payment to the state, you will have to pay the sales tax a second time (to the state this time) in order to get the title from the state.

When buying from private parties cash is king, with dealers it usually doesn't matter as long as out the door price is negotiated, not monthly payments.
