Stumped on my range adapter....

Ok, with a new desktop- this old Vista based Gateway is now my basement desktop computer. Catch is....it is so old it does not have built in wifi!

When we got the new one....bought a brand new adapter...would not work. Figured it was just too old for it. Was planning on buying a cheapie on amazon, but my dad gave me this one...

Figured since it only went up to Vista, figured it should work fine. Nope!It finds it, but can't finish it! Tells me it has failed. Searched a bit on the net....not sure why it why it would install it but fail to complete the process. Stumped a bit here....

There are a couple different troubleshooting steps to work on the software/driver for these (I have a similar one for my desktop).

First and easiest thing I would do is, with the adapter plugged in, go to windows update. Check the "hardware" or "optional" updates, and see if there is one for the wireless adapter.

It's been a cable it's whole life until now....whether it was dial up or cable internet.

Wondering if I might have to do a internal card.


Cable would have to go quite far in this house....

Move the computer temporarily and connect it to the Internet with a cable, so it can download the drivers for the wifi card.

Oh yea, my instruction wouldn't work without an internet connection... duh.

Check out this info from Linksys and read up. Some compatibility issues in Windows Vista with it. Needs latest drivers and such. If it were me I would download the latest driver's from the mfg on a USB drive using a computer with internet and then install them on your system. If it still doesn't work then start reading the FAQ or even go to the Linksys forum and look for help.

Update- Found the root cause: If has Registry issues. And me trying to fix them looks be sending what is left of Microsoft Windows Vista into a death spiral.

So, looks like an upgrade to windows 7/10 is going to have to happen to keep using this thing.......

Don't forget about some linux distributions! If it's just a backup computer for browsing type activity, can't go wrong with Ubuntu or Mint!

USB plug in Wifi adapters work just fine so long as you have an unused port to plug them into.
