Strut replacement

2001 Cavalier, 76,000 miles. Used as a local commuter, grocery getter, etc. in our family.

I'm planning to replace brakes, struts, and tires in the next month and would like to know what would your preference be for struts in this application?

One of the strut bearings/mounts is getting some noise, so I will replace those as well.

I am not interested in canyon carving with this thing, just a comfortable, controllable ride. I am thinking about Gabriel or Monroe at this point.

Don't even think of not going gas struts. I have a Cavalier, and am looking forward to it needing struts so I can upgrade. Not sure which brand.

You might also want to consider KYB GR2s(low-pressure gas/twin tube), although Gabriel or Monroe may be more economic in this application.

I replaced my OEM 170k struts on my 93 Mazda MX6 with KYB GR2s and the only difference I can notice is a little harsher ride over sharp bumps and slightly better dampening over 'rolls' in the freeway. I actually prefered the old high mileage OEM ride. Handling seems about the same.

Maybe some Monroes would work for you. I've heard mostly bad comments about Gabriels wearing out quickly.

You sure your struts are worn out already? My car was never bouncy and recovered quickly even after 170k miles. It was a big expense (even doing it myself) with new mounts, but I plan on keeping it long enough to have been worthwhile.

Actually no, I don't think that they are worn out, just worn. You know that typically as shocks and struts wear out the change is very gradual - you really notice the degradation when you replace them. I was going to change them more as a maintenance item than a bad part issue. I'm re-thinking the need for replacement after looking at the cost as well, maybe put it off and just take care of the squeeky bearing.

I know for sure that I need to replace or at least lube one of the mounts.

I agree that gas charged struts are the way to go - I use gas charged shocks/struts on everything.

thanks for your replies - surfstar that is a very honest evaluation of the KYB's. I have found them to be a preferred performance replacement, but have seen similar comments regarding being somewhat harsh on a regular driver.
