I finally got it started but would like some BITOG wisdom on the incident.
1994 Honda Civic, D15B7 1.5 engine, 235k miles. Usually driven daily, but it has sat unused before for days or even weeks without trouble.
This morning it hadn't been driven since last Thursday, 3+ days off. Cranking speed was good (I opened the hood and observed to make sure), starter and battery fine, but the usual chugging sound from compression resistance was washed out, and it wouldn't start after several normal attempts.
It started only after opening the throttle while cranking, and then I had to use the throttle to keep it at 2,000+ rpm for half a minute to stay running. The first time it caught and I let off the throttle it died. Second attempt when I kept if going with the throttle all was normal afterwards. It started normally later in the day.
My first thought was the IACV, as the intake on this engine seems to rely entirely on the IACV for bypass air, no extra "cold engine" bypass.
But if that quit I suspect it wouldn't recover, and the IACV has worked since then.
Due to the lack of normal chugging sound while cranking I suspect lack of compression, like something stuck on a valve seal. But then I thought this would skip only one cylinder, so the rest should induce chugging as usual. And what are the chances of multiple valves encountering such an object? Obviously the cam is turning or there would have been NO recovery (belt has been replaced at recommended intervals, last at 180k mi), and if rings had a problem it shouldn't be back to 'normal' now.
Before someone suggests auto-rx, this engine has already been through that treatment though it had no problems before. Last rinse completed a year ago.
Never had an engine issue with this car before.
