OK I just changed the oil for the first time in my 97 Honda Accord. The oil plug tip is coated with a black substance that is like epoxy paint. It is black but has a few tiny chips gone. This seems like a bad idea to me if it is paint. It seems worse if this is sludge. It is shiney like paint. Any Honda owners care to let me in on this one?

Don't know what it is but a guy on the honda fourm says it is normal.

Magnetic plug stick out beyond the end of the plug I think. This is the end where the treads end on the plug not beyond. Maybe the inside of the oil pan is epoxy coated.

i have no idea why your plug is coated, but mine isn't. i don't believe any of them are.

maybe it's from the previous owner never changing the fluid?

Ok one owner says its normal and one says it is not. Let us assume it is sludge. Why is there sludge in the bottom of the pan but not on the valves? They look fairly clean with no black baked on stuff present. I did an auto-rx and it did not touch this stuff on the plug. Maybe second treatment will show some results on this stuff. If this is sludge it would make a great coating for marine parts. Hard as a brick. Is sludge this shiney.

I believe that when they assemble the oil pan, they leave the drainplug in there when they spray the pan with that black paint inside and out. That would explaing the black enamel paint on the tip of the threaded end of the plug.

Of course any paint on the threds would come off with the first oil change.

I have noticed the black paint as well on almost every honda with its factory drain plug, or al least this is what I think I remember seeiing, definaltey not sludge.

I agree that it probably is not sludge - the factory plug from my '90 Honda Accord has had the paint on the end of the plug from day one. The only chips in its paint have come from when it has gotten scraped or dropped during an oil change.
