STP

In my opinion, I wouldn't use an STP filter. A lot for the same reason why I won't use their most 'famous' product, STP oil treatment. But that's just me.

If you want a good low cost filter, try a NAPA ProSelect, which is made for NAPA by Wix.

For example, a NAPA ProSelect for a 5.3 liter GM truck engine, or for the GM 3800 V6 is only $2.69.

I'd rather have Wix quality at an STP price.

At least in my FL820 app, STP appears to be an ChampLabs Ecore. Just look in to outlet hole and see the plastic cage. They also look to have a dual base, actually a thin one was added to help blind alignment.

They rank right up there with all the other Ecore's except the paint job/label may be prettier...:) So it depends on your color scheme.

I really dont care about the color. I have a few ST to use yet, but I saw the STP and checked them out. None were the e core. I was wondering if they filter better/worse/same as a comparable filter. But for around 3.50 they have to suck; they're not expensive.

I used an STP once in my old Altima, had no complaints. Great price and had no issues with it at all. I wouldn't worry at all. My friend used one in his Integra for a 6+ month OCI and also had no issues at all.

Cost has little to do with the quality of the filtration.

(Note there is some weak correlation of price to overall quality when measured by ALL metrics. You need to be the
judge of the value of each quality item.)

In my case, I get amazing filtration at $3.48 everyday pricing.

I "can" get slightly more amazing filtration at $12-15. Paying a higher price does not guarentee better filtration though.

LOL...that's what I'm using, FL820S...but my price recently jumped to $3.48. RF, maybe we are the only ones that can get PureONE-like performance at this price !

I would imagine there are other deals like this if you really look hard.

Why do you say that? The Motorcraft FL820S I use is only $3.28 at Wally World and it's a high-quality filter that's well-regarded on this site...

Just being sarcastic and a bit angry that companies refuse to tell you what you are buying. Im sure that using a delco, st, or stp filter will not decrease my engine life, but Id just like to know what I am buying. These companies claim to perform sae test, but absolutely will not share the results. These 3 filters are made by champion, but champion refuses to tell me what efficiency difference of the 3 are. Its not just champ. its nearly all manufacturers. I just feel that if I am going to support a company and give them my hard earned money I have a right to know what I am purchasing.

schwartr88: Gotcha...I thought you were serious.

glenncof: I haven't bought any filters at WW in a few months, so the price may indeed have jumped a little, but I still say it's the best deal going for a gen-U-wine Motorcraft filter.

Efficiency is pretty much an unknown as mentioned earlier. Yeah, the radioactive orange filter company claims 96% this and whatever percent that, but the design of their filters leaves lots to be desired. That can be determined by just looking at the innards of one.

That said, we CAN determine how well built the filter is.

That said, for around $2.69 everyday, I don't think the (Wix built) NAPA ProSelect filter can be beat. A filter with a solid design that is built by a top notch company.

So, why pay more?

You changed my mind. I have been thinking SuperTech at WM was the best deal going.

I think you are right.

Even though NAPA claims different media, I doubt the ProSelect filtration in microns any worse than Gold (which are not that great). Flow and holding capacity might be a bit better if Gold 'really' used glass-enhanced media. Probably not far from the ST filtration but superior construction.

Please cut one of those Napa ProSelects & show a picture here.

.

OK. Here you go. Because I like this site so much, I went out and spent $2.69 on an oil filter, just to cut it up.

What did I find? No surprises. This is the second ProSelect that I've cut open. The first one was used, and I didn't take any pictures.

A well constructed filter. A real coil spring (not a leaf style spring) at the top. Filter media that is securely capped with metal caps on both ends. A thick and strudy baseplate, with cleanly cut threads and no burrs. A standard black nitrile anti-drainback valve.

You know, this $2.69 filter puts the $2.43 SuperTech (and any Fram) to shame. This filter is built the same way that it is illustrated on the Wix website.

Pictures? You want pictures? You bet!

Sorry for the pictures of my hands. It's getting late and my creativity has already left for the night.

Sort of off-topic, but do you know if all (or most) Napa locations carry the ProSelects? Last time I went there and simply asked for 2 oil filters, they gave me the gold without asking what I wanted (which was okay) but for my mom's car, I think I'd rather use those than the SuperTech's as well (any excuse not to go to Wal-Mart is a good one!)

I don't honestly know, I don't work there... and haven't been to many NAPA's outside of my local area.

My NAPA stocks all three on the sales floor (Gold, NASCAR, and ProSelect).

However, anything that I've ever needed, that they didn't have on hand, they've gotten for me and had it before noon the next day.

My mechanic uses the ProSelects, and after seeing the construction of the filter...and the price, now I know why.

For 16 cents more than a SuperTech, why not? NAPA is not going to risk their name by selling inferior products.

The STP for my vehicle is one of the heaviest filters out there. I doubt it means its the best, but it sure is heavy.
