Does anyone have experience with STP Oil Treatment? Does it really reduce friction and extend engine life? Could it cause engine sludge buildup?

You are better off with Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment. There are new oil analysis posted here on the Synpower stuff and the STP 4 cylinder treatment (because is is not so terribly thick as the regular STP). It showed a lot more goodies in the Synpower.

Yeah, you've got to have a good reason to dump more additives in your oil. I wonder how the CD2 treatment (NOT the CD2 "sealer" or "detergent") compares to the valvoline?
Another option (for those so inclined) is Power Service Diesel Lube Oil Extender.. It provides a healthy dose of ZDP (3357 ppm) with without VI Improvers (thickeners).

I first noticed this product in Tractor Supply and then found some discussion about it here in the forums. I requested an MSDS from PS and it looked like it might be a good source of ZDP with out VI improvers so I sent an email to Power Service asking if their Diesel Lube Oil Extender contained VI Improvers. Their reply is as follows:
"Diesel Lube Oil Extender does not contain any thickeners to affect the
Viscosity Improvers of the oil. It will not affect the base of the oil
either. It only affects the detergent package of the oil. This is why
our product will not void engine warranties. It does an excellent job of
dispersing the soot in the oil which reduces sludge formations. It will
stabilize engine oil, reduce foaming, oxidation and help neutralize
acids.
I have attached a spread sheet showing all the tests that it has passed.
I don't know of another oil additive that has been put through these
strenuous tests and passed. Most oil additives will thicken the oil.
(Summary from the spreadsheet:
Tests: Caterpillar 1K Test, Detroit Diesel 6V92TA Test, Mack T-8 Test, GM 6.2L Test, Mack T-6 Test, Caterpillar 1N Test.
DL Oil Extender contains zinc which helps fill in or causes a molecular film to form over the cracks and imperfections of the combustion chamber (lower cylinder wall) which prevents cylinder from using oil. DL Oil Extender contains magnesium which is an excellent lube agent)

The composition of this mixture is proprietary information. Specific chemical information is being withheld as a Trade Secret. In the event of a medical emergency, compositional information will be provided to health professionals in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.1200.
This product is hazardous as defined in 29 CFR1010.1200, based on the following compositional information.
OSHA HAZARD/COMPONENT
Eye Irritant/ Zinc salt of dialkyl dithiophosphoric acid (ZDDP)"

I used to use STP almost religiously... It has it's benifits in some engines. But I would almost bet that adding it will cause some change in the amount of sludge you can expect to generate- as it is adding a lot of 1 addative, without any balence of detergents...
the reason I used to use it, was an interesting tidbit of info I heard from a very respected mechanic in my area. When he lived on the farm as a boy- his father, noticed a power increase in his tractors when he started using it- enough that he could pull the same equipment, over the same fields, 1 gear higher than previously.
My guess- is that these engines just happened to run better with higher viscosity oil and he could have noted the same increases by using a heavier weight oil.
My old 88 honda accord, seemed to run better with it. could have just been my imagination.
I experimented with it on my "ticking" rodeo... put a quart of STP(2 bottles) in with 20W50 weight conventional to see if a super heavy oil would quiet it down. (only ran that OCI about 1k, all in warm weather).. no notable change, so i switched back to not using it all toegther.

STP has it's place. However I wouldn't run it in an engine that wasn't burning oil. I once had a '70 Malibu beater with a really worn out 307 engine. That old engine would really suck down some oil (skeeter sprayer). Finally in desperation I started adding STP instead of oil when it was low. Eventually after many cans of STP the consumption was nil and I drove the car for months until I could afford better. I wouldn't recomend this particular procedure unless all else has failed. From what I have gathered in various places: STP (the standard variety) contains viscosity index improvers (sludge maker?) ZDDP (anti wear)a thick base oil and probably some other "stuff" I don't know about. To me it's just another "tool" and must be used properly. I really don't believe that given the use of modern oils; STP offers any advantages as a preventative. In the good old days STP might have given some improvement over the oils of that era. For me it's use is now relegated to "stretching" a little more life out of a worn out engine, or possibly as an assembly lube (this stuff realy stays put). And ditto the comments about Valvoline Synpower oil treatment. From it's ingredients looks like it really would fortify an engine oil. I'm using it now in everything (even the lawnmowers) at 1 Oz. per quart. Can't say it really does anything but it makes me feel better.
