Removed at 98k oil change. Was put on between last dealer oil change at 89k and this oc at 98k. I expected to find it in worse condition given what fell out when I unscrewed the filter and after CEL was on in my friend’s car with 1 to 1.5 qt low on dipstick before I had chance to do the oil change. Was on very tight and used filter wrench to remove (causing dents to top of filter canister)

Examined pleats in sunlight and didn’t see anything abnormal. Will try and get plastic end caps off and photograph pleats spread out.

Anyone have an easy way to remove the plastic caps? Metal caps came off pretty quickly.

a saw if you don't mind contaminating the media. If you had a band saw it would be quick job. Otherwise a large box knife.

A Champ Labs made STP XL, it's the XL sold at AZs in my locale. Interesting you were able to get endcaps easily off cleanly. Not endcap poppers, I'll say just shy of it. Not an issue, just an observation. As noted, the "plastic" reference is really the media/endcap potting material, some call it "glue."

So CEL related to low oil level? Imo, friend needs to check oil level more often and top up if need be between changes. Guessing small sump, and down 1-1.5 qts, not good.

As an aside, I think the folks that have PG made XL at AZ are fortunate.

Thanks for c&p.

From my unscientific observations, it seems to be an east half vs west half of the country thing. I’m in Florida and the Auto Zones around here carry the PG made STP’s. Seems like most of the Champ Labs STP’s I’ve seen cut and posted on here are from the west half of the country. Anyone else notice this or anything different?

The XL’s near my work and the OHIO line are PG made too

Well, I'm in the piedmont of NC and it's Champ Labs made XL. At some point I may get to check the eastern part of the state and see what they have. Especially because of the flashlight findings on Champ Labs seal areas, imo PG made XL is preferable.

Think so, b/c the CEL went off and didn’t come back on after top up and then new oil change. Car is going to dealer on Tuesday and requesting oil consumption test and some KSDS (?) update from a class action settlement.

Code was P0014 iirc. Posted it in the oil change thread. And looks like low oil can cause that code among other things.

The car takes 4.2 qts or so per oil change. So yes - small sump, 5w20 on cap though 5w30 for dealer oil consumption test reqd, 4cyl and known issues in many of these kia/hyundai engines. I had another friend with a Kia optima that received a new engine.

I advised my friend about the issues, TSB and class action and we will see what dealer says. Class action settlement extends engine warranty to 150k or 15 years if the KSDS update is completed at dealer b4 engine blows.

If dealer doesn’t do anything, two quarts of HPL EC 30w will be used to top up and then VRP 5w30 for next 4 oil changes.

This STP filter was probably purchased in Colorado or Arizona.

How does the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) update tell the driver when it's detecting excessive bearing wear and danger of engine failure? Some alarm warning light pops up on the dash?

I don’t know. I didn’t research the KSDS and not familiar with its relationship to oil consumption issue/TSB.
