Hi all, got some new brake discs on the cheap and wanted to store them to use in a few years time, they come with an oil coating on them but was washed off when I was gonna put them on the car and realised the old discs were in excellent condition and will go another round of pads easily.
What sort of oil do discs have on them when the come from the manufacturer? Would regular engine oil do?

WD-40 was initially developed to be a very thin light-weight anti-corrosion product for rockets that are stored for a long time like ICBM"s.

As long as you don't wash it off, it probably would work well.

Maybe others know of something better.

I wipe the metal T slot table of my milling macheine with WD-40 and sometimes theres a long time between uses. Its over 20 years old and no rust.

Anything's fine but if you had bar & chain oil "with tackifiers" it would stick better.

Really just oil them up then stick them in a plastic bag laying flat.

I have a bunch of rotors for future use also. Still in their original oily bag, but stacked like a deck of cards. Write which car they belong to on the bag with a sharpie on the bag.

Imho, it may not be a good idea to stock parts that you don't plan on using for a long time, even if they don't go bad in any way.
Example, I bought a few oil filters from RA for future use and they wouldn't spin on, turned out they were mislabeled at factory but I was too far out on return or replacement so had to eventually toss them as there was no car to use them on. Another possibility is the car gets sold or disposed of in another way.

^ Just wash it off when you install.. I know you will, but the thin oil from the rotor factory is designed to burn off if the installer forgets.

I agree dubber09, " DON'T OVER STASH PARTS ! " Kinda hard for a BITOGER not to do that. I have stuff all over the place..Sometimes, I'll come across things and be like " what car does this fit ? " It's a BITOGER psychological disorder, I'm convinced of that. Everybody has their quirks, and we have ours. I have jugs new oil I caught on sale I won't need for 3 years. LOL :)

I have a pair of new rotors in their boxes in my bedroom closet on the floor. They are not in the way and I didn't have to coat them with anything.

See what I mean dubber09, BITOGER's got stuff all over the house !!!!!! I'm not the only one. I have stuff in a shed, in my daughter's playroom, ( which I took over when she was 6 years old ), in the attic, in the garage itself.....:)

Just bought a set of zinc coated rotors. My guess is that after a week they will look just like all the rest.

Yes, the zinc wears off where the pads ride, but stays put everywhere else. GREAT for the salt belt areas. Clean that oily packaging stuff off the rotors with brake cleaner and a rag so not to contaminate the new pads,
