Hi,

Say you have cars that are not classicntage but that are excellent cars that will not be used for a year or two. Say youre going away on long term travel or whatnot...

Is there some sort of insurance to insure the property that is your unused car is protected from theft, damage, total loss, etc., but that removes the liability limit of your self/users from the equation? I assume it would be quite cheap unless you live in a high crime area or someplace that is guaranteed to have mass destruction of cars and homes.

Id love to drop my coverage and just insure some of my cars this way, as Ill be going on travel for work for 4 months, and wont be using them; theyll just be parked.

ANy ideas??

Thanks,

JMH

Your insurance agent should be able to set you up. I do the same thing with my Z that gets stored from October to November. A quick call to the insurance agent and it's switched in the fall, another quick call in the spring and it's back to regular coverage.

how much does the cost decrease when its switched to storage?

Thanks,

JMH

I've always kept my better cars under insurance during storage. You simply drop comprehensive and keep fire/theft/vandalism. The cost depends on a lot of variables. I pay $150 per year.

My company has a policy that requires you to insure a car for at least three months if you plan on driving it. This keeps people from excessive switching from driving to storage if they travel a lot, which could get rediculous. With four months away, your insurance agent should accomodate you.

I don't have the numbers with me but I think it saves me a couple hundred per year by making the summer/winter switch. The fire/theft is pretty cheap-especially since it's in a building with a security system.
