I am lucky, the thieves do not want what I drive. Then I got to thinking. The cars/rides I do have, hmm, did I make a wrong purchase since the bad guys do not want what I'm driving. Its a thought. Do car thieves know what sells best?http://www.bankrate.com/finance/auto/10-vehicles-most-often-stolen-car-thieves.aspx?ec_id=m1175264

Back in the 80's when I worked in the city I had 2 Buicks stolen. At that time I only carried liability insurance due to a really thin budget. So, both thefts resulted in both cars being totalled and really set me back. My solution: 1972 baby blue VW Superbeetle. NOBODY anywhere wanted it. Plus I could park it for 1/2 price at all of the downtown lots if I left it unlocked and the attendants could put it in neutral and roll it around the lot and that way they could double park it. I finally sold it to an FBI agent who had 3 Buicks stolen.

Not news to me, already knew they wanted the cars I drive...

I love parking a 5k Honda in the back of the lot between 2 suvs but the guy with his 30k m3 can park front row with no worries xD

Some cars are stolen for parts and others go overseas. But in some cases the high end cars have gotten so difficult to steal that now they are being car jacked.

Just last week a friend had her car stolen and posted about it on Facebook. She didn't specify what kind of car it was, so I guessed Civic.. Yep, I was correct!

About 15 years back, I was considering a job transfer into Chicago, as in the city.

One thing that I was figuring into it was the cost of a car that would be decent sized, cheap to own, and something that no one would steal or mess with.

My plan? A late second generation Taurus Wagon with a 3.0 engine.

wow how old are you?

but that's hilarious. out here in st. louis,mo county, never even heard of a stolen car. All the business my family has are located in the city, which is the dangerous area here, and never heard of any stolen cars there either.

My son's 1994 Dodge GC is virtually theft proof. First, nobody wants it then try to get it started... Twice somebody tried, broke windows to get in, then trashed the steering column trying to get the lock out. Failed both times...

The only problem with a Yugo is that it's so old and unreliable, there probably aren't any around that run anymore. It basically answered the question when a used car is better than a new car.

Wow that's insane, I had no idea. I did say never heard of it, didn't state that it didn't occur, I wonder what part of St. Louis that is, as in west county if people even hit your parked car they leave their information.

There are a lot of factors that go into why a car gets stolen. Desirability of the car itself actually isn't the end all factor...ease of stealing it and the popularity of the parts may be.

A lot of cars are stolen simply for joyriding, or to commit another crime with such as robbery. In those cases, all that really matters is how easy it is to take the vehicle. This is why a lot of the cars that get stolen are ones that can be started with a screwdriver and some force.

Saturn s-series was popular with thieves a few years back. Probably due to the long production run and interchangeable parts, and the ability to buy a clear titled one with bad motor (burned through all the oil) for a few hundred bucks.

I was in the junkyard and wanted a saturn liftgate strut. The electric liftgate release would not work as they pulled the battery. So I put my key in, wiggled, and opened it. Not a brinks truck.
