Steve McQueen

He was my hero as a kid in the 60's. He drove the Mustang in the car chase scene in Bullitt. He also loved Motorcycles. Because he had a Porsche, I had to have one! A $3700 912 but still a Porsche. I also raced motorcycles and had to have a Husqvarna Enduro like he rode. Lost my VHS tape of "On and Sunday" but have great memories. Thanks for the reminder.

Correct Sir I didn't even bother to check the math... Thanks!

Brand me a heretic if you will, but . . . I was never terribly impressed with McQueen as an actor. He did the "cool" thing well on screen, and apparently lived his life on his own terms the way we all wish we could. But his performances, to me, have never been that impressive. I haven't seen everything he ever made; perhaps his Tom Horn, or his character in "The Getaway" with Ali McGraw, would change my mind. Maybe it's that he was often so low-key, as for instance his baseball-pitching POW in "The Great Escape," that he fails to shine for me.

That said, he and my favorite actor, Robert Vaughn, were friends for many years. Vaughn tells some stories about him, I think, in his memoir A Fortunate Life. I'll have to look through it again.

"We deal in lead, friend."
( -- McQueen's gunfighter, Vin Tanner, in "The Magnificent Seven")

I've liked McQueen in most of his roles. Especially 'Papillon' and 'The Sand Pebbles'.
Was he 'cool'? I think so, but in my opinion others were a bit more so. He was always rebellious and self destructive in a way that I don't always find 'cool'. Of that time period (1960-1975 or so) I always admired Sean Connery as 'cool'. Paul Newman had it as well.
Just my opinion.

I usually liked him as an actor. What impressed me the most when I was a kid was that he was a motorhead like me. Cars, Bikes, Racing. Himself, James Garner, and Paul Newman were the first actors I remember as being racers.
Sometimes I think our media and the desire for the good old days might put too much emphasis on Steve being cool. I'd like to think Steve was just being Steve.
