OK time to admit I have a thing for steam trains. Gresley A4 'Pacifics' al-la Mallard world speed record holder, Stanier A4 Pacifics, but mainly Bulleid's A4 Merchant Navy, West Country, and Battle of Britain class Pacific class 4-6-2's. Unrebuilt over the rebuilt version. BR 71000 Duke of Gloucester rescued from Barry Scrapyard is a favourite. Nothing like a well turned out steam loco to stir the sole IMO! What's your favourite?

I work for a railroad and my company was the last in North America to stop using steam. We haul lots of coal and had a 6000hp beast (4-8-4) that could handle the mountains. It sits in a museum now. They ran it for special events up to about 10-12 years ago then officially retired. It's a good looking bullet style train.

The Henry Ford Museum here in Dearborn, MI, has an several steamers, including an Allegheny (2-6-6-6). They have at least half a dozen other engines in a period roundhouse they constructed a few years back and a couple they run around their Greenfield Village pulling open sided passenger cars, one being a Navy switcher, the other a traditional type steamer. I can't recall all the types though.

This pic is taken about 100 yards behind my house. I get the bell, whistle, and phump phump phump all summer long.

Locally a locomotive driven entirely by COMPRESSED AIR is on display. It was used in hazardous environments where there could be no open flames, (grain storage etc)

I was lucky enough to ride on the 611 the last time it was taken out in Norfolk. I was around 10 yrs old but do have memories of the trip. My Father is a huge steam man.

My sons (7&3) love Thomas the tank engine like there is no tomorrow. We take summer vacations up and down the east coast and jump on every steam engine we can find. I'm starting to get a kick out of it just watching their faces light up. I'm going to take them to the B&O museum in Baltimore this summer.

"I'm going to take them to the B&O museum in Baltimore this summer." I would love to see that, you guys will have a ball. I believe they have an old G.E. U-25B diesel that used to be in Louisville and Nashville paint at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chatanooga.
