I definitely have a concern. Last night, upon returning from work, I checked my mail, and I now have an official U.S. Passport! This proves that I could in fact get one. I never saw a reason why I would be denied. So now I have one. Yay.

The problem is, that.. in order to get it, the State Department office had to hang on to my Birth Certificate. That is fine.. I only have one, the original. I submitted it, as per the procedure, and as far as I know, I have not received it back.

I do plan on visiting the office as soon as possible, to inquire about where it could be.. they don't make getting a replacement Birth Certificate easy, but that's not even the point, it's an identifying document. My question is, has this ever happened to anyone else?

Its easy to get another one. Easiest is to go to your State congressman and fill out the form. Request the long certificate.
The reason to go through your local congressman is that they it gets expedited.

Typically it's sent back. Hopefully not lost. Getting my kids birth certificate in MA from city hall was easy. They did not even ask for ID(3 times with 3 kids) although my guess is profiling went on.

Just get another one from county where you were born. There is really no "original". As long as its from the county usually with the embossed stamp its fine.

Good luck getting it back from the bowels of the state dept.

All great replies, I am troubled though how they could send back one thing, and not the other.

Hopefully they have it sitting at the Post Office.

Here, you have to go to Bureau of Vital Statistics and maybe now that I have the Passport, it won't be so bad.. Previously, they would ONLY mail it to the address on an I.D., and it almost got thrown out from a Florida PO Box (had physical address on an I.D., set up for forwarding to a PO Box at a private Post Office substation, almost got tossed when I didn't check it for many months due to incarceration, what was in the mail? My Birth Certificate .)

Oddly, the replacement one looked ridiculously insecure. Like I could have made it at home, on my printer. Raised Seal, that was about it. The original issued by State looks completely different..

Who thinks State Department office in the County building still has it?

(*also, my County is the only in the nation that no longer issues it upon walk-in. 9/11/2001 invalidated ALL of my County's Birth Certificates. That actually happened..)

This is good hope, there may be a chance it is coming soon then.

Thanks man!

I believe it's sent in a different mailing.

Don't want ALL your documents to get lost or stolen in the same package.

I just went through this a few months ago.

My birth certificate was mailed back separately, and it arrived a few days later after my passport. There was a letter enclosed with the passport, advising me of this.

New passports are mailed from a facility that only manufactures passports. They never had your birth certificate there. Thus they can't mail it back with your passport.

The whole "your birth certificate will be mailed back separately" deal is explained to the applicant SEVERAL times during the process.

It wasn't for me.. I found out FedEx Kinks didn't take my pictures right. So they took new ones.

So you think my BC is still coming?

^^edit: looks from previous posts like it is.

Kewl! My days as a migrant farm worker are almost over! To the WORLD!

I recently renewed my passport, and as a part of the process, I had to mail in my old Passport. I got the new passport and then the old one came back separately in a few days to a week.

You will get your birth certificate back.
When Mrs. Tdbo and I went to London and Paris in 2010, She needed a passport and I needed an updated one.
They took her birth certificate and they took my old passport from the 1980's.
She got her birth certificate back and I got my old passport back (with a hole punched in it) in separate mailings.

Whoa, whoaaaa nelly. Whooaaaa. Let's not let this be off the rails.

What I meant, was: the process, of the passport, of being "explained multiple times," did not go for me like that.

I actually found out that my father's middle name was NOT Dennis in this affair. I learn something new every day!
