Startup question as it relates to 0w20 vs 5w30

Last year I gave my son-in-law (SIL) some of my Euro A/3 B/4 5W-30 stash w/ a MANN filter and he took it with his Beemer to his local garage that charges him$25 to change his oil when he supplies the oil and filter.
He called from the garage when the mech insisted his BMW required 0W. He told the mech an aeronautical engineer gave him the oil. Mech got on the phone and said the 5W won't flow fast enough in Winter! I asked when he expected the temps to drop below -20F in Washington DC. :ROFLMAO:
I heard some cursing in Spanish in the background and then my SIL said he was going to come by for me to teach him to do his own.

You must have very good family relationships. It's good to be aware of the fact that many mechanics aren't well versed on motor oil. That doesn't mean they aren't excellent mechanics but they are a bit uneducated on what's best for for giving advise on the matter.

I think it's very kind of you to give advise AND provide him with a good selection of what's best for his car. This is another matter that makes me love BITOG so well.

I agree.. Im finding the people on this forum to be amazing.. I mean all this advice is time given and nobody has to do it.

Among the names of those who are well qualified and that we can trust there is only one that I don't agree with, but overall we have a few well qualified individuals who make this forum a good source to study.
