Today at work I got a sales call from a StarTron fuel additive/Ethanol sales rep , and boy did he have some interesting claims about the product. Started of asking about my sales of StarTron and how it does in sales compared to Sta-bil , Lucas Ethanol and etc. I asked him , why I should try to sell his product over the others and his answers were pretty out there. Apparently according to this rep StarTron is the only product of its kind to contain 0% alcohol , works 50% better than any other similar product too. Here is what got me , according to him it is the best fuel system cleaner on the market by far , and that it yields on average 2-6 miles more mpg on every fill up. He stated his 06 Tundra gets 5 more mpg with its use , well thats when I kinda lost it lol. I told him flat out that it was impossible that his truck or any vehicle would be able to get anything like this with the use of a additive . I then asked him how his product cleans better than a PEA based cleaner and if it contained PEA or was it another solvent based chemistry . After this question I got about 5 seconds of silence followed by a "I honestly dont know what you are talking about Sir". My simple response was "Yes I didnt think you would and please do not waste my time , Goodbye". Anyways I thought maybe some bitoger out there might find this snake oil salesmen story or whatever it is kinda humorous. Looking back now I wish I wasnt so short with him as he was only doing his job, maybe I could have educated him or something..

I love talking to the guys at autozone or AAP or the like.. about oil there are some real greasemonkeys behind those counters & there are a few people that are completely lost without that computer. I love the younger guys that are trying so hard to impress you with there knowledge.. yes using brand xxx oil will completely rebuild your motor to like new specs.. or the 3,000 mile OCI diehards.. "Your car will implode if you dont change your oil every 3,000" jsut cracks me up !

Yep...he took a risk of making an unsubstantiated claim to an informed educated client and lost. He knew darn well he was "gambling" don't feel sorry for idiots like that.

That was fast thinking to mention the absolute best gasoline detergent as of currently...PEA. It not only cleans the best, but most importantly is DOESN'T LEAVE ITS OWN RESIDUE BEHIND LIKE EVERY OTHER DETERGENT. Very few consumers know this, not sure why Chevron doesn't make this statement more often since it is SAE test confirmed.

Honestly depends on the store and the employee . Most are in it for a paycheck , but a few like me who do it because they truly love the parts biz. Trust me not all countermen are complete morons , Id like to hope im not one of them lol. I find it funny when people claim that parts guys couldnt do their jobs without their computers , most good and great ones have very detailed knowledge of automotive systems but nobody can memorize 50,000+ parts numbers and applications. The best way to get good service from these guys is to treat them as you would want to be treated, would you like it if someone came into your office and treated you like a moron??

Despite the sales guy, the product has some legit science behind it. There was a good thread on this site where people got into the specifics of how the microbials work. It is different than PEA and might be as good. There isn't really enough real world tests out there for it.

As soon as I finish up my last round of my MMO experiment, i'll be trying it out. The doses are so small it is a relatively cheap maintenance product.

I agree that it could be a very good product that's not expensive to use. I will be trying it at some point in an old outboard and lawn equipment etc. But we were talking about it from the aspect of wild claims.......
