Whenever I see a post with that title it drives me crazy! Does the person want us to read the question quickly or reply to it quickly!!

Normally means I know there is some discussion on the board but I'm not going to spend the time to look and get info on the question so ask it again...

Then the new thread becomes an long thread rehashing what is here already.

In my experience, it means they want a short answer.

Whether a short answer is possible or reasonable is another story.

No,it's about idiots that don't know how to title a post correctly!

His irritation is well founded, IMHO

There are well defined (and historical) guidelines for posting in newsgroups and forums; they are in place to increase productivity of participants and to allow for well crafted searches.

Titling a post "Help me make a decision." or "Does this plan make sense?" wastes people's time and makes searches more difficult. Compare that to "Can I run RL5W40 in a VW502.00 spec motor?" or "Can my 302 chug ARX and run a MMO chaser?" With those titles I can easily decide which threads may be valuable to me and which ones I can pass over.

This is for computers forums, but can easily be adapted.

I think everyone gets the idea

I hate the phrase "Quick Question" - The kind of people who regularly say things like that remind me of sleazy used car salesmen. It's the same kind of people who call everybody "Bro," and refer to their belongings by their brand name (i.e. 'Oakleys' instead of 'sunglasses').

Speaking of annoyances... it bugs me when someone in real life says to me, "can I ask you a question?" That irritates me....the person is asking me a question to see if they can ask me a question? My reply is usually, "you just did".

OK, so they should say something like, "Do you have time to help me with an issue" or something similar?

I just look at it as I'm happy they are asking if they can engage me, rather than doing what most do, which is machine gunning the question at me.

So sure, if you want to get technical, they asked you a question about asking a question. However, in context, they are attempting to be polite and see if it's a good time for what is likely a more complex question.

I tend to ask that or something similar because I know the irritation of someone just ambushing me with a question, rather than asking if it's a good time to go deeper into an issue.

So I should just call it a car instead of a Pontiac, Toyota or Nissan?

That would impact 99.44% of the folks here.

Well, if you're talking about it in a way such as, "Hey, let's climb in the Beamer and go grab lunch, bro." Then yes, you should be calling it a car, like normal people. If, however, we're on here and you have a post thats titled "1998 Pontiac Sunfire burning oil" or you say in response to another post, "Yes, my Pontiac always burns lots of oil." Then you're not doing anything wrong. The brand of car is pertinent information in that context and should be mentioned.
