as a maintenance man at a local retirement village

had enough (35 years) of refrigeration/airconditioning breakdowns and their panicked customers, midnight callouts and the ridiculous rules and licences pertaining to refrigerant purchasing, handling, reclaiming and disposal

the job pays about a half of what my last job did, but you get to work in beautiful grounds, really friendly co-workers and at a VERY leisurely pace. 7am - 3pm, lotsa daylight left after work

no more company vehicles, but salary sacrafice instead. any jobs beyond our scope are sub'd out and done by local tradies. 1/2 hour smoko's when we all sit down and have a chat and talk about what's happening in the weekend. no more filthy overalls, now it's dress shorts and hawaiian shirts

i think i'm gonna like it here
 
Good for you that you are happy at your new job making less money than your last job.

Some people only care about how much the make, only to b%*@# and complain just how unhappy and miserable they are.

I did field service for a medical equipment manufacturer for 11 years, so I know what you mean by... "breakdowns and their panicked customers, midnight callouts and the ridiculous rules"
 
Hope you like it. When the shipyard closed, I worked for 2yrs as a maintenance carpenter at a local college. The snotty little [censored] drove me crazy. I had 3 kids to raise so I moved on. In a few yrs, maybe a retirement home gig would be worth a try.
 
I totally understand. I worked in DC at a job with terrible, greedy people that had no quality of life. Once I left I found a whole new life and can spend time with my family now. I took a pay cut but it was worth every penny!
 
You probably made the right choice.
And it's not so much what we make, but what we spend.
Being a little smarter in spending can make up a lot of the difference.
Starbucks every day adds up, for instance.

I heard a joke on Leno a while back:

"So it seems that in England, a study has shown that cocaine is now cheaper than coffee! You know what we know from this, then? That England has Starbucks!" [big laughter]
 
Hope it works out for you...sounds pretty good. Pay is a relative thing. Just be more frugal and you should be good.

Just over a year ago I opted out of pressure and took a huge drop in pay to work in my local town.I pushbike to work,just a 5 minute trip over the river on a free bike,so the drop in pay is somewhat compensated by not paying vehicle costs and the time commuting.I work in a pretty good environment,and get to watch other people stressing out doing the job I used to do.I have no problem being told what to do by people half my age,I love the irresponsibility.My job is secure....I just got to hope the company can weather out the next year or so.
 
The marine trades. I am trying to find a job in the Anacortes,
WA area. Real nice area to live in as well.

I have a fair amount of automotive mechanical experience. I have taken some Marine Maintenance Tech courses at Oak Harbor, WA. They will be moving the Marine Tech program to Anacortes in 2010. I intend to complete an AA degree there. I worked at a Sea Ray dealership as a Service Adviser at one point. I also worked as a technician/special projects at an ROV company "Underwater robot" in San Diego for 2.5 yrs. I would like to do something that allows me to move up the chain at some point. I will probably have to start down on the totem pole to get there. I did enjoy working as a Service adviser at Sea Ray. So something along those lines is what I would like to do.

My goal is to be the first in my family to get a college degree. My Dad, Brother, and Sister all have college time but no degree. I have taken Automotive Tech classes in 1980 and in 1985. My history of finishing is not real good as you can see. My Daughter has five years of college right now. She wants to be a physical therapist. Not sure what discipline she is getting into though. She is going to go for a masters at some point.

When I lived in Hawaii as the youngest child we moved around the islands a lot. Hence I was never able to fit in well in the schools. Being white did not help either. I was skipping school when I was in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. It was my older brothers great idea. When our family moved to Seattle in the middle of 6th grade it was like jumping up a grade level. I realized the Hawaiian schools were about a grade behind. I never really recovered through high school. In fact half way through my Senior year of high school I realized I had half my credits needed to graduate. I had to go to night school, but finally got my diploma. I am trying to catch up in college. My grammer, math etc is not great.......So for me to get a AA degree would be a big deal to me. My daughter is an Einstein compared to me. She was passing me up in math and other areas when she was probably in 4th grade.

We all have different situations in life, my oldest brother has a genius IQ, so go figure.
