start up noise

I have a 06 suzuki aerio and the engine has a timing chain. Is there any oil that works best for chain noise at start up ? the manual calls for 5w30 or 10w30.This may be a dumb question, if so ,cut me some slack "please".

It's not dumb at all as many models of engines have noisy timing chains at startup, usually associated with the hydraulic chain tensioner having to pump up. And there's one sure fire way to help that; find an oil filter that will keep oil in it overnight. So my first suggestion would be to try different oil filters, one with a silicon antidrainback valve.

I know some engines with chains are just inherently noisy and nothing will help them.

Does your vehicle have the oil filter mounted with the open side facing straight up, or does it tilt to the side? Often that is the culprit.

This is not going to be of any help to your current issue, but interestingly the Japanese are pushing for a new test requirement in the next oil standard being worked on (GF-5). They feel the current tests do not adequately measure the ability of oil to resist to chain wear.

Heavier oil is always going to be quieter, but that does not necessarily make it better.

If the hydraulic tensioner is the issue, then lighter oil may get the tensioner working quicker. I also agree with the suggestion to get it back to the dealer for servicing.

I changed oil 500 miles ago ,the car has 9500 miles on it. I am using havolin 5w30.do you think its a mechanical problem?

I forgot,i used a puralator premium and its on the side at a slight upward angle

Use a synthetic oil.

Experiment with the oil filters. Don't just look for the best ADBV, sometimes a cheapo free flowing filter will work well.

Try the Amsoil or GC. These are the heavier
30wts.

And, IMO, most of my noisy chain'd engines quiet down on moly. Find an additive or an oil that has losts of moly. Torco, Redline, and Royalpurple have decent moly amounts. Some of the mineral oil and blends have a good moly dosage. Visit the VOA/UOA section for others!

Could be a bad ADBV on the filter, try replacing just the filter and see if it improves. That'd take less time and hassle then going to the dealership.

Havoline or Chevron would be a try for moly
if you''re using dino. Maxlife is too but you probably don't want High Mileage oil yet.

YES - REPEAT......

Make an appointment at the dealership. It's under your free warranty coverage. If they tell you "it's normal", get that sentence in writing & go further up the food chain -- if need-be... all the way to the opposite hemisphere by phone, letters, faxes & emails.

Somebody will sympathize with you - if the dealer doesn't. What's occuring to your vehicle is not normal & should not be there.
