Staining or Painting a Deck?

I have a deck, maybe 8x5( small one) and has Pressure treated wood.

Planning to power wash and then stain or paint it this year, so that it can serve for a long time.

Question is, what should I use? I have some deck paint laying around which I can use, as well as some garage paint. Can any of that be used?

If none, price is not really a concern vs long life. Any other product which can last longer and you guys have used? Thanks for the help

Use stain...never paint a deck. Paint can wear or chip and after that happens it be impossible to make it look good again
without sanding off the old paint and starting over. Stain, it fades, and can be re-stained...no problem.

Thanks for a great tip. Stain from any big box store would be fine or have any specific brand in mind? So I'll power wash and scrub it well with some cleaners and then stain it. Any other tips I should follow?

All the stains I have used seemed about the same but a professional may have a favorite.
If you start with a light color stain you can always go darker...start dark and well that's
what you got.

Thanks, that's what I have now, but it does change the color of the wood, as well as mold and all. Can't the stain improve the life of the deck?

most of the big name stains at box stores have a 5-ish year warranty, so that's a pretty good estimate.

If another deck is in my future, it will be this:

It's definitely over 2 years, but some parts of the deck wood is still in great condition and hence I am trying to save it.

Trex is definitely for me, but in future. For now, have to stick with this one and make sure it last sometime

I prefer Sikkens Cetol SRD semi-transparent stain. Have used Cabot in the past and prefer the longevity of Cetol. I get the Cetol from a near-by Home Depot. Not all the Home Depots carry these stains, so check on line or call first, if Cetol becomes your choice.

My deck is over 20 yrs old, and still looks pretty good. It received a good cleaning and stains about every 4 years. Used Cabot at first, and then moved the Sikkens Cetol SRD.

My pressure treated frame and cedar deck boards deck lasted 15 or 16 years without paint, stain or treatment of any kind. In the 15/16th year I replaced about 25% of the deck boards. Should be good for at least 5 years with no further maintenance.

The treated wood frame should be good for a few more decades. The deck boards may need a general replacement in 5 - 10 years.

Thanks, I'll try to find Cetol at my local HD or can even request them to order it.

That's why you stain it. The stain just fades so you can just slap another coat on it later. I don't think it's too late, you can do it anytime. I used Benjamin Moore Arborcoat on a deck about 8 years ago. Still looks good.

As always, thanks Wolf359, that's exactly the reason I am considering to stain it. Because I know with a proper stain it can last a LONG time, even if I have to stain after every 3-4 years, not a bad deal.

Look up Woodrich Stain

Looks great if you prep properly. No stain lasts for ever , but basically you want something that you can wash down and every few years just roller another coat on. Looks awesome on mahogany.

You're welcome. Over the years you learn that it's cheaper to use really good stain than to buy a cheap stain and do it over and over again.

Ditto, hence I posted in my OP, price is not a concern vs long life. Better to do right, first time and hence I am researching and asking.
