What's up with this goldish adhesive gunk? The other ST filters I opened didn't have it. Any thoughts?

I dunno. It would probably be fine, I'm sure they don't use an epoxy anywhere on the filter that would dissolve in oil. Might take a better look the next time I buy any, though!

Funny you posted this. I usually get the 4967's for the Corolla's. Anyways, I always check them at the store. Last time I went for some, ALL 8 of them had that stuff! I may just switch to Napa Proselect as they're only a few cents more.

I was just there last night poking around, I buy the Wix for this application usually, but opened one up and was a little shocked to see that.

I would think any adhesive used on the end caps would be already cured before the filter is assembled. Do they put a sealant between the end plate and can?

The 7317 is not an e-core. Too small in diameter.

I guess I should take a closer look at the ST4967 I just bought recently...

The ST7317 has been like that for months. I, along with another member here brought this up in separate threads and nobody seems to be aware or chose not to comment on it.

And the funny thing is, ST filters have been endorsed by many on these boards in recent weeks -- more so than ever before.

All non-ecore champs have that glue. The non-ecore pf 52s in my garage have it and I run them with no worries.

Nothing to be worried about imo.

Imagine how many of those non-ecores have been installed by GM dealers all over the country.

My thoughts, since you appear to have been in the store, put it back and buy another one. That's why I always check the box first
#7317 (non ecore) is a very popular app used in many Honda's and Nissan's. I've used them before and would again.

Not throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Every filter maker may have issues from time to time, doesn't mean they are all bad and as some might say "I'd NEVER use these again".

And after all, we should be much more forgiving here, as ST's are US made and owned, right?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Went to Wally and checked them out today. That appears to be the way they are constructed. I've used them before and never noticed that. That said, I wouldn't have a problem using them. Being a non ecore it has the blue button dome end bypass, so it construction would be different than the Ecore with the combo valve.

It does appear to be some kind of epoxy like material. The ones I looked at it was fairly uniformly spread.
