It's hard to say (or see) that there is a problem here other than the OCI was way too long (judging by the gunk on the bypass)

Did the filter fail? Wavy normally means moisture in the oil (and another reason for NOT doing 2 year changes IMO)

Still prob nothing like this will stop the engine.

Sorry about the pics I think I held the camera to close. Looked good on the camera. Didn't realize how bad they were until I downloaded them. I thought I could fix it but I made things worse sorry. The pics do not show how bad the black gunk was. A thick sticky tar. Yes, the car does run good. It does burn oil. Here granmother gave here the car and when she had it, it was very short trips and minimal maintanance. Now that my daughter has the car it's alot of running around and no maintanance.

It's very good considered that it's in service for 2 years and 30+k miles. The media is still intact and there are some sludge which is very normal for 30+k miles.

I think that its a ST filter is beside the point. Even the highest quality filter (most expensive) is going to look like [censored] after a 30,000 mile OCI...

Like somebody else mentioned, all things considered this "cheap" filter held up well.

yup--you got your money's worth out of that one. Next one will probably look the same even with a 5K change

I think the issue is more the 30K than the 2 years, and more an oil failure than a filter failure (well, owner maintenance failure when you get right down to it... no offense). The oil was used up and began to form oxidative byproducts (sludge, varnish) which began to plug the filter. The engine probably looks the same inside.

And that's likely the bigger issue. All things considered the filter held up reasonably well.

That said, the Prizm (Corolla) is a very reliable tough little car/engine. If it's running ok, a few shorter OCI's (3-4k), with a quality cleaning oil like PYB or (5k)PP, should help clean it up. Others can speak to MMO, but another option, 3/4-1qt. added the last 1k of oci wouldn't hurt either imo. Might not hurt to change the pcv too.

^All of these, stick to short oil changes for the next 2 years, with factory PCV valve and other maintenance items 'up to snuff' and it should be okay.

That's serious filter abuse. The ST didn't crumble or rip holes... so that's a good thing. Probably spent a lot of time in bypass though.

Really? 27,600 miles on this Amsoil EaO80 off of my 04 Cummins and I don't use a by-pass filter.
