Spyware blockers

Haven't tried Max so sorry can't say. I did just purchase a new Qwest dsl modem that is loaded with firewall and other protections. It seems to be catching 99% of what my spyware (spybot) used to pick up., rarely do my searches find a bot now.

if you have youre internet browser set up properly it wont download any spyware without asking you first.

if you happen to get some spyware that comes pre bundled with some programme, then that programme probably isnt worth using anyways.

So far I've tried Ad-Aware, Spybot, the Microsoft Beta Anti-Spyware, and Spy Sweeper.

Spy Sweeper seems like the winner to date, and that correlates well with 3rd party reviews.

.

If you install a lot of cheap software or use AOL and the affiliates, then you'll probably need a good spyware program. Even with these 3 you're installing you'll have conflicts and slow up your computer.

All you really need is a simple firewall like AtGuard, which shuts all dynamic ports 1024 to 65535. Then set the rules for inbound/outbound traffic.

I've used AtGuard for years and have never run virus scan. You can deselect the file extentions you want your pc to open to eliminate viruses. I could go on forever. I'll stop.

I don't use Adaware any more since I've started using Firefox. I was using IE 5.5 and it definitely has some security holes in it as I did have spyware set itself up on my machine.

I have Firefox to reject all cookies except for a small handful.

I don't know that Firefox eliminates the need for spyware software ... I'll run Ad-Aware tonight and see what it shows.

Same problem, many opinions.
One Solution: SpywareBlaster

It's free and its sole function is to block Spyware from ever setting up shop on your hard drive. Works for both IE and Firefox. It is not a scanner. I have had it installed for awhile now and Spyware scans from numerous programs usually come up empty. Before I had it installed the other programs would come up with 5-10 spyware bugs, now usually none.

One more thing: http://www.firewallguide.com
Invaluable resource on all things spyware, trojan, etc. This is not a site that is trying to sell you something, only good info and links.

No one program does them all. Same goes for Anti-Virus.

You want the best protection? You're gonna need like six programs....

Yeah I haven't searched and destroyed for a long time (1 year +) - I'm a 110% FF convert - however after I ran a bevy of detectors - I found some JUNK (since deleted). The usual - it's amazing what some programs miss and others catch.

Back in the day there wasn't much antispy SW for FF. I installed SpywareBlaster - it does slow the computer a bit, but no biggie.

You *can* run multiple anti-virus programs on your PC if you have it set-up right. Mine are not set to constantly scan. I can't stand how slow it makes the PC's. I can see how this would create a problem if they were all scanning at the same time..

I just started using Kaspersky's online scanner with good results. I've been using AVG Free and McAfee for the most part. It takes more than one for me to completely find all the Trojan's that CHILDREN'S websites try to deposit on our(for instance). It's crazy.

I just got my first failure for MS antispyware. I just started getting popups again. The odd thing is ..the popups show up as new FF windows ..if I close them ...they immediately reappear as IE windows. As much as I've tried ..there appears to be no way to get rid of IE in XP (I really haven't researched it ..but simple attempts are thwarted by XP. I add the url to my adblock ..but I don't think adblock is designed for this type of attack. Once entered, I never get another from that server ..but they just rotate the source

I'm running a, long idled, Spykiller, to see if it finds anything.

I don't use MS Anti-Spyware. Office 2003 would not uptdate properly, only removing this MS product would allow Office Update to work properly. It doesn't catch as much as PPatrol or CounterSpy. And, would you trust MS with protecting it's own product in light of the fact that MS doesn't even patch it's own O.S. within a reasonable amount of time just because MS doesn't deem a patch as "critical".

MS AntiSpyware is akin to trusting NTBackup.exe for enterprise disaster recovery.

My MS AntiSpyware doesn't appear to be doing the daily autoupdate I set it up for. Any ideas? I will probably get Max Secure PC and delete MS Antisyware if it doesn't update.

MaxSecure is pretty good. It's what I currently run on my PC. SpySweeper is downright obnoxious. It's not a "set and forget" product-it's constantly jumping up in your face. And with the fiasco of their most current enterprise version I have trouble supporting them in any way.

Unlike antivirus software, you can run multiple antispyware software products on your PC. However you should be fine IF you have a basic antispyware software program and use some common sense on the Internet.

While the statement "No one program does them all. Same goes for Anti-virus." is true for antispyware products, there are several antivirus programs with a 99.5+% detection rate (per av-comparatives site) My personal choice, Kaspersky, has a 99.9% rate (total without DOS or other OS viruses). Besides, you should never run multiple antivirus products on one PC at the same time. It's asking for trouble.

Gary, have you checked the Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs. There's apparently a setting to make FF the deafult browser.

I can't say for sure because I don't have XP but I have seen in mentioned many times on Mozilla forums.

Funny you should ask this NJC. Recently, when I went to use control panel ..the screen does a wink and does, what I can only describe as, a "flash reboot". I lose a few icons from the task bar. If it's really good, I get the little flashlight looking for the contents of the control panel. If I go to Printers and Faxes ..and attempt to "move up" the chain ..same thing.

It looks like I'm in for a total purge and refresh soon.

Oh ..MS anti-spyware found something ..I deleted/removed it...but the popups persist. Spykiller found nothing.

All the adds have a pathway to delete the offending popup utility that's causing it. It requires you to go to their site and remain hooked up to the internet to do so. This usually means that, while they will remove THAT utility, they will install 4 more at the same time.

What's odd about this is that no one has made this a criminal offense yet. If I could find them ..I would surely get violent with the person or persons who sit there in smug comfort causing this level of frustration. Normal, site sponsored, banners are just fine, but these invasive techniques just need to be eliminated by making the use of them unlawful and putting the burden of it upon the vendor of the advertized service/item.
