Chlorine bleach works well and is cheap but you have to find one that doesn't contain sodium hydroxide. NaOH will change the alkalinity of your soil and it's not good for streams and rivers should it run off into water ways. Also if you use it on masonry (concrete, brick), it gets absorbed and can cause efflorescence.

Most chlorine bleach contains sodium hypochlorite (NaClOl which is toxic to to fish and invertebrates. And probably other things too.

sodium hypochlorite biodegrades into harmless byproducts. Whatever you pour into the ground would be gone before it found its way into a creek or river, and even if it did it would evaporate very quickly

I want to contribute to this thread, I really do... But this would be the third time I go out to the pub this week. LOL

Coupons...I use them.

Picked up a nice toilet seat for 4.99.

Free boombox from someone who didn't want it, couldn't use it with their Mp3 player....

^ I was amazed at home depot when the wood toilet seat was under five bucks and cheaper than the plastic one that was 1/10 the weight and very flimsy. Of course I got one.

The seat is a classic and made in USA IIRC. I can picture the same woodworking tooling in use 100 years ago for outhouses.

On the subjects, the family follows the "let it mellow" rule if it's only for a minute or two. Remember in the winter the tank fills with 1.6 gallons of near freezing water and that thermal mass soaks up room heat.

Not to nitpick, but instead of diluting it, you can just use half the dose to begin with. Once it mixes with your wet hair it'll be no different.

Bringing lunch instead of buying. If somebody else is buying, no problem.

Figuring out what is more valuable, my money or my time when I buy groceries. Wal-Mart and Aldi are cheaper and 3 miles away, Publix is 2 minutes away with much shorter lines.

There is something to be said for prediluting shampoo. It mixes better with fine hair and doesn't glob up and rinse away without fulfilling its mission.

What ever you get from the government is taken away from someone else. Uncle Sam dosen't pay for anything.

I like to shop when you get an extra 15% off even on sale items if you use your credit card and then pay the card in full when the bill comes in. My best deal was when I bought a pair of slacks on sale and the received another 15% off and I had credit for my purchases for the last 6 months and the store gave me $0.50. That was the first time I had ever happened to me. I always ask for a senior discount and use coupons.

In the past couple of days I have tried drying my clothes without putting a Bounce sheet in there and I honestly can't tell the difference in softness of the clothes! So I'm gonna save money by not using them anymore.

I also save a ton of money by looking through the local grocery store flyers every week and stocking up on items that we use a lot. I end up shopping at 5 different stores every weekend, but they are all pretty close together so I'm not driving far out of my way (and I'll often save $5 or $6 just with one purchase at any given store, so it more than pays for the 50 cents in gas to drive there)

Another money saving tip, the only time we go out to a restaurant for dinner now is when we save up enough air miles to get the free gift certificates.

This is a sweet one. Some stores do this with sale items, coupons and cc discount.

I know it's not what you are talking about - I don't usually do the sign up for the credit card thing, but when we bought our vacuum it saved us huge cash to start a new card, we paid it off in full right and away, then a few months later we killed the card. I think we saved in the realm of $150, plus we got a few years worth of HEPA vacuum bags and filters thrown on with the deal.

As for the senior discount, some places start at 55. 3 years to go!!

Two words: Dollar Store.

Another three: Save-A-Lot.

I feed my big male cat cut chunks of chicken hearts and gizzards, available at Wal-Mart for 1.50/lb., and at Save-A-Lot for 1.75. At one meal of chicken hearts a day, it lasts him a week or more.

For me, I do some ground turkey sizzled and browned in olive oil, together with some pasta; or skip the red sauce (much as I love it) on pasta and top it with soup containing chicken and vegetables.

Sure you can save with coupons, but it would take an awful lot of time for me to cut them out and arrange them, and bring 'em all with me to the store.

I dry my wash outside (sans undies). My neighborhood isn't that prissy.
