I would operate a flight into Dallas because I doubt it will happen again but I guarantee you it will happen again in Haiti.

The message is clear in Haiti, the gangs don’t want planes coming in.

I have never heard of a plane being shot at in the u.s before.

Some loser nut job heard about it and decided to copy it.

I have flown many places and never worried about triple A on final approach before.

I don’t get how FAA allowed airplanes to fly there and back.
Last year I had student who was part of one of security agencies in embassy in Haiti and in the end had to give him incomplete bcs. situation.
When Serbia was trying to establish flights to the US, I think they had to go through 2 years of TSA, FAA inspections. This, that, whether fire trucks have penetrating needles etc. But gangs around airport? Totally fine!

We flew a number of earthquake relief flights into Port au Pince, Haiti. Mostly medical supplies and a high tech table like device to set leg bones of the seriously injured. Also took a young orphan back to the USA that had been per-arranged prior to the disaster, as both her parents had died of aids. The situation was both interesting and ugly.

We'd be in a long line of flights on approach, the US Mil worked approach and ground radio. They were fantastic and got everyone to a grass parking spot instantly. Where we unloaded and then departed. On one approach, we had to do a 360 on final directly over the shoreline city, as the cargo plane in front stopped on the runway.

During that low altitude, 360 on final, we traveled through the rising smoke from tire-fires, watched people battle each other on the ground, saw bodies in the street amongst the rubble and more. It was surreal. To the best of my knowledge, we were not shot at.

What was most frightening were the final flights in. By that time, we were able to wander through the city a little. They were starting to clean up the rubble, and there were bodies in the piles. Ugh.

At the risk of understating the brutally obvious, that place is best avoided. I will never go back.

Were you flying when USCG was using cutter to help approach?
I was at Air War College and they guy who led airport operations there was giving lecture. First two days they used stool to stand on and help airplanes land. Then USCG located cutter to help navigation.

When I worked at ILN (Wilmington Oh) at Airborne Express occasionally we would have planes come in with bullet holes in the underside. Wasnt an everyday occurrence, but it did happen multiple times. Given the demographics of the area, didnt surprise me. Or anyone else. Assuming this happened locally and not at the destination airports throughout the US.

There isnt enough beer in this world to get me to go to Haiti.

Per FFA it's illegal to fly under 500 ft over houses, aside from a few exceptions, yet they are constantly barely at 100ft.

Don't really care so much about the privacy violations, but it's crazy loud. I can't even make phone calls INSIDE without having to wait between planes to speak or hear.

It's so bad some summer days I have to wear earplugs as it'll give me a headache from the constant noise... loud enough it rattles the walls.
The airport is to the north, to fly over my place, it requires a sharp 180* after taking off or a 180* to land. Which per the FFA isn't a normal pattern, but it's "uncontrolled" so no actual flight path.

And before anyone says it.. the place existed before the airport. Orginal house was in built about 30 years before the airport.

Calgary recently built a new parallel runway east of the existing existing main runway. The new runway , 17L35R is 16,000 ft long. It became the main runway for planes approaching from the south. Unfortunately for a few existing neighbourhoods this shifted the flight path over to the east and changed the noise issue in homes that were there over 50 years.

We had checked with people around and the FFA on flights and were told it was pretty quiet and not in line with any usual flight path.

My old place wasn't much further from another airport and it wasn't too often for a low flying kazoo.
Both are just kazoo airports, no terminal, ATC, etc.

Bought the land in the spring and was quiet, found out it's pretty much May till September that it's crazy.

I contacted the FAA to see about low flying planes, and they verified that 500 is the bare minimum, and it's 1000 over neighborhoods.

They wanted me to "log" the low flights with tail numbers, altitude, etc so they could check in it.
So I did, turned it in, and then they told me there wasn't evidence.
So I took videos.
They they claimed they couldn't tell the altitude, even though a couple cleared my trees by maybe 50ft.

Also had some drone footage, my drone at 100 meters and planes WELL below.
They tried to get me in trouble for the drone, even though it was 100% legal and 100% my right to use it in my land. Wasn't even using it for the planes, was taking video to check property lines and a section I was bush hogging to make sure it wasn't in the neighbor's land.
It'd be like getting in trouble for being on the sidewalk because an idiot in a car wanted to drive there

Low cost airlines are not doing well in Canada also.

I see Flair airlines has stopped serving the Capital of Canada, Ottawa.

They blame high airport fee’s but they already knew that airports fees are very expensive in Canada ( the government owns the airports and leases them out treating them like cash generating machines ).

Flair will be gone soon.

But, some info before you do that:
FAA considers 500ft minimum altitude above your land.
The US Supreme Court (1946 decision), on the other hand, considers 83 feet above the highest structure on your land. At 84 feet, it is the public highway!

No, they are not, or your evidence would have been used to prosecute the pilots.

Sorry you feel this way, and sorry you don’t like the airport, but it was there before you bought your house.

If you believe that they are illegal, gather evidence. The FAA is merciless in prosecuting pilots.

Don’t do anything illegal or dangerous in the meantime. Those same pilots will be merciless in taking you to court if you put them at risk. You cannot afford that battle.
