...or install delete the C: drive, then install PC Linux 2008.
Have you guys ever had a problem installing Linux? The other day I was trying to install Ubuntu on an old Toshiba laptop with Celeron and It would neither load from the live disc nor it would install Linux.
Windows XP installs and runs without problem.

Installed the alternate Ubuntu. The laptop now runs much slower than Windows XP. So much for Linux being faster than Windows...

Try Sabayon. If you've got a system with a decent graphics card, you will LOVE it.

Then download the i386 ver of Sabayon and give it a run, do you know what it has for a video card by chance?

Well, it is pretty well known (to Linux users) that the Gnome desktop environment is pretty hefty. "Linux" is just the OS, NOT the windowing environment. For older machines you should load Xubuntu which uses a less resource intensive windowing manager called XFCE.
XP has speed advantage due to the accelerated video drivers; a lightweight manager such as XFCE, Enlightenment or openbox on an older machine will definitely outperform XP since it consumes less resources.

That IS an antique!!! LOL!
In the Gnome desktop under Appearance Preferences shut off visual effects, that will help some.
In your case I too highly recommend Xubuntu.

Another interesting distribution that will work and I use on a thumb drive when traveling is Puppy Linux. Very small footprint and could very well be what you would be looking for?

You could just download the Gentoo install CD and build your own as well. Fluxbox is a VERY fast desktop.
