I think this is another case of the BITOG over-thinking syndrome, and I suppose it's not entirely surprising that many folks here are making you second-guess your purchase.

The tires you bought are not some off-brand selection manufactured from recycled pencil erasers in a converted Chinese woodshed. They are a US-made, well-regarded tire sold be reputable dealers. Personally, I wouldn't have the slightest concern running them on your Rouge.

Yep! It's perfectly fine to run those tires.

It's kind of hard to explain, but tires that fit SUV/CUV's do not fit passenger cars - the sizes are different. Some tire lines are advertised as being for SUV/CUV's - and they probably have small differences compared to otherwise identical tires advertised as being for passenger cars - HOWEVER - these differences are small and not enough to worry about. In other words, this has a lot to do with the marketing department.



As absolute statements, it's not true, until you get to certain sizes in the CUV/SUV realm.

Let's take the OP's 225/60r17.
BMW 7-series, Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, Ford Five Hundred, etc.... also uses 225/60r17. Last I checked, they are not SUV's/CUV's.

235/60r18 is a common CUV/SUV size. Then your statement becomes true.

True but let's not forget the vast majority of the Ford Exploder tire failures were based on a combination of 3 conditions occurring simultaneously.

1. Hot climate = hot pavement
2. vehicle overloading beyond the weight on the door sticker (consumer's fault)
3. under inflation. (consumer's fault)

So as long as "Mr.T" rated tires doesn't:

1.load his vehicle beyond what the T-Rated load is for that tire.
2. exceed the 118mph sustained speed rating
3. allow the tires to be under the inflation pressure on the door sticker.

he should be fine. If the SUV is a kid and grocery getter....no problemo

The under-inflation is Ford's fault, not the consumer. The consumer was following what Ford said on the door sticker.

Tires fail for many reasons. I would guess exceeding the speed ratings is very, very low on why they would fail.

A road hazard going in the tread and out the sidewall (causing a blowout) can happen to any (speed rated) tire at legal highway speeds.

Now if the tire wasn't rated for the weight it was carrying-that could be an issue.

I've been a DT Tire fan for some years (currently 3 vehicles).
Every time I got a lower speed rated tires (i.e. a T rated instead of H rated) no DT tech has ever mentioned to me anything about any lower speed rated tires for any of my vehicles.

I recently bought DT house tires (Arizonian Silver Edition III "T" rated) for my son's Camry and they didn't try to up-sell me a more expensive tire (coming off Michelins) - I was kind of expecting them to, but nope. In fact 2 techs talked good things about this tire and one of them was running them on his SUV himself. I figured if my son wasn't happy with them, within 30 days we would take the car back and roll out with something else. Past 30 days and he says he's happy with them (better... dad bought the tires). But no winter rains yet, time will tell.

Times I've ran lower rated tires I've never had a problem because of that - I don't speed race and haul loaded up either.

And that's what I was recommending above.

Speed ratings are widely misunderstood. A T rating doesn't mean that those tires will be safe on a person's car, even if they drive the speed limit, because of the limitations of how ratings are derived. It depends on how the car is driven, how it's loaded, where it's driven.

Snow tires. Is higher speed rating better and safer? (As absolute rule according to you and CapriRacer). As an absolute rule, H-speed rated snow tires are better than T-rated snow tires. Thus V-rated snow tires are better than all of the inferior speed rated ones. As an absolute rule, it is false.
 
The OP wasn't talking about snow tires.

And no one made any absolute statements...except you...

Any data for that?
I can't see how in the OP's case, even driving around with the full cargo load, that the tire is likely to fail driving at 15 over the speed limit anywhere in the US? If so, why have testing and ratings at all?
If you are driving at 60% of rated speed with 60% of rated load, you would hope you are well out of the testing tolerance range... If not then whomever designed the testing needs to get sued out of the business...

Because they are an INDICATOR. Tires that do well on these tests are better than tires that do poorly. Ergo, an H speed rated tire is less likely to fail than a T rated tire.

It doesn't quite work like that. The testing is conducted in a lab under ideal conditions, where the real world can have all kinds of strange circumstances that are eliminated by the lab environment.

Plus, we are talking percentages here. If I take a tire that barely passes the test, it will have a failure rate of .... Oh, say 1% (not the true value!) If the tire is improved 10% (as measured on that test), the failure rate drops to - say - 0.1% (again, not the true value). So even operating a tire at only 60% of its rated value does not yield a non-zero failure rate - just an extremely small one!

I could be very wrong, but I was under the impression (from somehwere, dont remember where) that the Firestone/Ford issue wasnt the tires construction, but a problem of Ford recommending an inappropriately low PSI?

My notoriously cheapsake brother (who makes double what I and my wife make together and lives in a house that could shelter 3 or 4 families) pumped his factory Firestones up a few PSI and ran them out to their natural lives and never had an issue. He drove it to the dealer when they were worn, they replaced them for free, and away he went....

Bottomline: Firestone had a faulty design and a manufacturing process that made things worse, and while Ford didn't help with the low inflation pressure specification, Ford's spec was adequate.
