Speed Governor

A lot of cars and trucks already have a speed governor. It is usually set to the speed limit of the the tires. Although some, Vans for example, may be set lower.

I would think that it is programed into the car's computer. Whether you could re-program it would depend on how the manufacturer programed it. In multiple option vehicles, I would suspect it could be re-programed. I doubt that dealers would do it, due to liability, and the software is normally very expensive, if available at all.

It is usually set very high, around 112 mph for cars. I know some Vans are set at 89 mph.

I own a business where I have numerous passenger vehicles on the road at a given time. I would like to limit the speed, if possible, to a maximum of 75 mph. I was just wondering if that was something that was feasible.

Yes, there are several companies that make add-on governors for fleet vehicle use, just Google it.

IDK if Ford Mykey does that but it does limit radio volume and other stuff hooligans get into.

If you have certain company issued cellphones you can use their GPS to track your people and their speeds as well.

agreed. Honestly adding limiters would open you up to more liability than just leaving them as-is.


Also yes ford mykey does allow you to limit speeds, I think starting at 80mph.

It's common practice for businesses.
 
I remember seeing a Dodge Dakota fleet truck that said "This vehicle is limited to 70 MPH" or something like that on the tailgate. It's definitely doable. I'd ask a dealer since they may have the ability to change the limiter. Dealers that do a lot of fleet sales / upfitter stuff almost certainly know how to limit the speed.

Ya its pretty funny when the college kids come in asking if we can increase the limits their parents set before they sent them off to school. One time had a lady come in and her husband set the max speed limit and radio volume, we told her to ask her husband to reset it, wow she yelled a lot.

I had an Isuzu NQR with one of those tags (60mph) pass me a while back...he was running msybe 75. Does not compute.

Yeah, in Atlanta, and down here you would get run off the road at 75.

Ford MyKey does let you limit speed.

My experience has been that most ford trucks are limited to around 95, Chevy to 100 and Toyota to 105.

Interesting that it is so low. I know my 1993 is limited somewhere near 110-115 mph supposedly and I know the newer GM trucks are limited to 98 mph, so 90 sounds strange.

My understanding with truck limiters is that it has more to do with the driveshaft balance than tires.
