So I did an oil change today and with the ice in my lot and whatnot things didn't go as smoothly as I would have liked and then to top things off I forgot to fill my WIX sample bottle with the stream of the oil draining. I went from an 8K to 9K run so I definitely want to get the TBN results so I filled the bottle from the drain pan. Although the pan had been drained, it is well used and wasn't wiped clean. Will the TBN reading be accurate? Should I skip this drain and go 9K again? What would you do?

I would just move onto the next OC; if you want good results, get a good sample. In the end it will be better science and psychologically/emotionally more statisfying.

I think you need certainty. lol

Did you drain the old oil filter?

You can get a quite decent reading with the old oil out of the filter.

That's good info but yes I did drain it. Completely lost sight of the UOA mission, was retrieving the new filter and caught sight of the WIX canister and MAN was I ticked off.
I think I'm going to let it go and maybe try 8500K, we'll see. If it means anything the oil was an amber color and my drain magnet had little "soot" on it. Oh well. Still it's better doing my own changes, I know what actually gets screwed up.
