MAINSHOCK: Tue 30 Oct 2007 07:04:55 PM /usr/share/lib/zoneinfo/PST MAGNITUDE 5.6

11 km ( 7 miles) E ( 88 degrees) of Milpitas, CA

STRONG AFTERSHOCKS (Magnitude 5 and larger)

At this time (immediately after the mainshock) the probability of a strong and possibly damaging aftershock IN THE NEXT 7 DAYS is approximately 30 PERCENT.
EARTHQUAKES LARGER THAN THE MAINSHOCK

Most likely, the recent mainshock will be the largest in the sequence. However, there is a small chance (APPROXIMATELY 5 TO 10 PERCENT) of an earthquake equal to or larger than this mainshock in the next 7 days.
WEAK AFTERSHOCKS (Magnitude 3 to 5)

In addition, approximately 15 to 40 SMALL AFTERSHOCKS are expected in the same 7-DAY PERIOD and may be felt locally.

It's really only the stuff that falls on you that's dangerous. Or if the floor under your feet gives way. Or if a fire breaks out -- which might then be put out a by tsunami.

I was taking a shower at that time and noticed the door banging. I though it was someone knocking on the door trying to hurry me. Didn't feel any movement though. I better secure my oil stash.

My place is sitting on sand. I can feel the UPS truck rumbling down the hill ten seconds before I can hear it. The ground is like Jell-O here. In case of severe shaking, the sand will mix with the groundwater. Soil liquefaction will cause buildings to more or less gently settle into the quicksand, taking occupants with them.

I felt it as well. I was in class at the time, and there was this loud, violent buzz coming from the back of the lecture hall, lasting several seconds. The instructor wasn't one bit concerned and continued his lecture once the noise stopped.

Given that this country is prolly the safest place in the world to store nucular waste, the tremors that I've experienced are only minor...scary, but minor.

I'm actually in Vegas this week, and I am staying relatively high up in one ofthe hotels. I could have sworn this evening that I felt the floors shaking a tiny bit, both in my room and by the elevators. I discounted it for an elevator operational effect, but this very well could have been related. Ive heard that they can record tremors from very far away...

Be safe,

JMH

im only about 4-5 miles away from the epicenter and it shook like crazy. it felt like the end of days. im getting ready for work right now and am gonna see some guys that live right on or mere blocks away from it.

Experienced a minor little earthquake in Georgia about 6 or so years ago, it happened around 4 in the morning I think. It briefly woke me up because it rattled the bed, but I thought it was my wife...you know, blowing off some steam.

I joked with her that her tiny little self shook the whole bed. She was not amused. Later found out at work that we actually had an earthquake.

the state has put out a warning that there could be a larger quake coming within the next few days. this 5.6er seemed to have put stress onto the hayward and calaveras faults and not relieved stress like most of them do. so strap on a daiper....

Today's 3.7 centered in roughly the same spot like yesterday's 5.6 and could be felt at my place 50 miles away.

The California Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council, a panel of scientists that advises the governor on earthquake forecasts, issued an alarming warning that Tuesday's earthquake "has significantly increased the probability above the normal level for a damaging earthquake along the Calaveras and/or Hayward faults within the next several days."
