Maybe I'm outta line here, but a premium-class luxury vehicle needing a complete re-build at 193k miles doesn't impress me.

I know 193k is a lot of miles...but still, a vehicle this expensive should not suffer this kind of failure, unless horribly abused.

Lots and lots of vehicles half the price of this one will go 200k miles w/o consuming a drop of oil.

I do admire the poster in the thread for re-building an engine this complex, tho - that is some impressive work!

This is one vehicle that you see being rebuilt. Without statistics, you don't know how many need this type of work so it doesn't actually show that all of these cars burn a lot of oil and need a rebuild. Not to mention the original owner may have extended the service intervals past manufacturer recommendations. And to say "Lots and lots of vehicles half the price of this one will go 200k miles w/o consuming a drop of oil." without statistics to back it doesn't really say much.

Also, the poster of that thread clearly saw there was little wear for a 200k mile engine.

It was the VQ35DE 'Revup' that burned the most oil, this was slightly different from the regular VQ35DE and was paired with MT vehicles from 2005-2007?. The VQ35HR is the next evolution which did not seem to suffer as much from high oil consumption, but I think that these engines frequently do track duty and get abused more than your average VQ35 in a Murano.

My car will not consume any noticeable oil between changes normally. If I do a track day and spend a lot of time between 5K and 7K, I can use a quart in a few hundred miles. I don't consider this a problem because in normal use where I only redline it a few times a day, consumption is negligible.

Personally, I think this is a PCV issue. So much oil is vaporized as well as sloshing around from cornering forces, I think it get sucked through the PCV system. Whenever the intake manifold top is off, the manifold is coated in oil with puddles at the low spots - which can only come through PCV.

Oil in the intake is a very common issue on many late model cars. Pull an intake sometime and look at it. It shows how carelessly the pcv setup is implemented.

This engine is an example of not being able to look at valvetrain cleanliness as an indicator of overall cleanliness.

Nope, definitely the 02/03 DE especially. (I owned 2 2002's)
Mine was about a quart in 1000KM (600 miles)
