Boron and Calcium for cleaning, Moly for anti-wear. It depends what you are leaning towards in an oil.

I am surprised no one mentioned that the ole Syntec has the egde over Castrol Edge (pun intended).

Does Edge have something else going on with the base stock that we arent seeing here?

No that is not a wear metal, it is a detergent/dispersant as is calcium.

Good old thread on detergents

Magnesium and Calcium (and sometimes Sodium) detergents and dispersants - are indeed picked up in a simple UOA as additives, unlike the "soap" portion of the detergent (sulfonates, phenates, etc) which of course go undetected. The relatively higher amount of Mg, Ca could indicate a nice level of overbased neutralizing additives.

People didn't test for it. It costs extra.

If you don't run your oil for long OCI's it is not really needed.

Edge has some PAO, where the Syntec is just hydrocracked.

Looking at just these numbers, would it be safe to assume that Syntec and PP are similar enough that one could substitute either (by that I don't mean mix together)? Asking because PP prices, after one drop, are back up and staying up so far, while Syntec here is always cheap.

Going by just what's posted here, my take is that Syntec (with its extra Moly) provides better wear protection and has good detergency, although not quite as good there as PP.

Right now I have 5W30 versions of both that I plan to use, but unless I pay a fair chunk extra, Syntec is more readily attainable (so much so that it can almost always be had for less than WM Supertech syn). Anything I'm not seeing from these numbers that justify paying the extra here for PP over Syntec?
